I have a Nokia 6340i on Cingular. I can already access the test mode.
I'm looking for some instructions for interpereting the codes
displayed. My goal is quite simple. I live in a rural area and I'm
considering switching to a GSM phone. As I drive test using the Nokia,
I'd like to be able to determine when I'm in analog, TDMA or GSM
    coverage. Can anyone assist?

You can tell GSM by 01-01, and seeing a real signal strength and channel
number. You can tell TDMA by 21-01, with a band indicator (abABCDEF)
with a channel number and signal strenth. On 21-04 you can confirm TDMA
by a system name (Cingular, Cingular Extend) and a SID (also seen on
21-01). You can recognise AMPS by getting the TDMA signs, while 21-02
shows "DCH not active" or "ADCH not active" (been some time since I've
seen it last, out between towns and villages).
