Cigarettelighterplugs, what's in them?

Howdy folks

I've been looking for a holder for my Nokia 6600 that can both hold an
recharge it at the same time, now for quite a while. And what I mostly
see is plain holders and "plug it into your cigarettelighter outlet"
cables. I don't like that. Today I found on the internet a product by
Brodit. It combines the two, but still has this ugly plug and cable.
So the question is:

Can I cut of the plug and connect the wire to another power source
within the car or is there something special inside that plug that goes
into the cigarettelighter outlet?

PS I think I'll keep looking. The Brodit holder doesn't give the
impression that my phone won't fall out. And I think it's ugly too.
The Nokia holder looks better, but has no power cord attached. :-(

A transformer.....throw 12 volts at your Nokia and it will fry baby!

The best way to overcome this is to buy a 12 volt extension lead and plug
the charger into it, tape the plug and socket, hide it behind the dash and
cut the plug off of the extention lead and hard wire it to a 12 volt source.

Hope that makes sense.

If anything they may just have a resistor to drop the voltage - as well as
the fuse of course.

Why not just measure the voltage coming out the end of a car charger to find
out?

It does. The guy at the local mobile phone shop suggested the same
thing.
