I have a 3595 and would like to change the ringtone from the
stupid T-mobile one that comes with it, but I don't know how.

Ok, I see USB cables for this phone on ebay, but do you need
special software to transfer them from your computer to the
phone, and can you get software to do it, for free?

And what kind of file formats can the phone use? Wav? Midi? Mp3
    maybe?

Where can I get free tones to download without all the teasy
stuff where they say they have free tones but then want you do
pay or do all kinds of other game playing?

Yes, you can transfer ringtones to this phone using a compatible cable and
you can transfer any standard MIDI music file as long as the phone's
processor is capable of playing the number of instruments contained in it
(in the case of the 3595, the maximum number of notes it can play
    simultaneously is 4).

Naturally I am bound to draw attention to my software MobiMB which is
designed for transferring files to/from this phone. Also PolyPhonix Studio
is available if you find you want to manipulate the MIDI files yourself/add
vibration channels/cut them down so your phone can play them.

MIDI is the standard format for composers writing music, and so the files
are widely available. Many have already been trimmed to play well as
ringtones, but obviously if you have a 60 minute symphony, or a MIDI file
that wasn't written with your phone in mind and has too many instruments,
you might need to work on it a bit.

Before anybody asks - no you can't convert MP3 to MIDI, not very usefully at
    least.

Of course, if he has data service, he could just post the tone files on a
website and surf there to download them. Wouldn't that be easier and
    faster?
