Do you need a GPS hardware add on to use navigation?

Hi,
All those TomToms and other software for navigation, to use them, I would
need to buy a GPS bluetooth device? I have N80, are there any cell phones
with this built in?

Hiya mate!

Yes, you'll need a bluetooth GPS receiver and probably an active
aerial. If you buy Tomtom, you'll get a receiver in the package (for
about £200) or you can get a copy of Tomtom off any of the P2P
networks and buy a receiver and aerial off ebay for about £40-50 for a
16-channel receiver up to £70-80 for a 32-channel (16-channel is OK
for most things). Tomtom also do a 'software only' package, but I don't
know how much it is.

I use my N70, along with Tomtom and a 16-channel bluetooth GPS with
active antenna on my motorbike. I've got John Cleese telling me where
to go (litterally in some cases) and it works fine. I've also got the
latest database of speed camera's (very usefull).

Hm this seams more complicated than I thought. Wait what are those channels
for? I thought you get a GPS, that has a built in antena to connect to the
satelite and it connects to your cell to send data via bluetooth.

The latest GPS receivers have 30+ channels. Each channel is capable of
receiving data from one satellite. As there are only 28 satelites currently
up there, you'll be lucky to get a lock from much more than 8 at a time.
Having said that, the newer units have far better chipsets and therefore
better reception. If possible, go for a SIRF3 chipset.

Yep, that's about the size of it. You start to encounter problems if your
car has a reflective windscreen, but the newer units are affected far less
by this than they used to be. I use a Holox BT-321 receiver (without an
external antenna) in a vehicle with reflective glass without any problems
whatsoever.

The N80 has current bluetooth issues with all GPS software mate, so dont buy
anything yet




you'll need a firmware upgrade idf you are still on a phone running v3

Yep, just got v4 few days ago. Fixes the SMS problem. And it seams more
responsive.
