    Hello,

I just got a new Nokia 6030 and have a few questions:
Q#1: How can I get a better clock display (a little brighter) in
    standby mode?

Q#2: How do I set up preventing the use of the phone by others?
I have tried entering a PIN Security Code... but it does not work.

Q:#3: How do I use the "Lockout" feature?
I know you press "Menu" and then "*" within 1.5 seconds. Sometimes
it works and sometimes it does not. The screen has to be in standby
mode for it to work. Sometimes when in active mode the screen is
dark... I can't unlock and then need to wait a while for the screen to
    go back into standby mode...

    Any help is most appreciated,

    Skipper/Sy

I doubt this is possible. This is quite unavoidable for existing colour
    displays.

Your phone does have the security keyguard function. Once keyguard gets
activated, the phone security code (5 digit) is needed to access the phone.
This is on the manual at "Phone settings", took me some time to find it as I
was looking after it from the security section.

I consider "fixed dialling" a good security feature. You can set most of
your "active numbers" allowed and open fixed dialling when calling some less
frequently used numbers. Normally if you would lose your phone, the thief
would not keep on calling too long to your friends or other preferred
contacts on the fixed dialling list, and if he/she did, you would get some
feedback from the thief through your friends.

I guess it is normal that you have to be in idle menu to lock the keyguard.
If you were in the middle of something, just press the red dial key to reach
idle menu directly and then "Menu, *".

I don't have a phone to test but from "locked idle", perhaps you should
activate the phone e.g. with the red dial key after which the "Menu, *"
    should get reliably recognised.

Q#1. I guess I will just have to accept that the clock display will
    remain dull and not backlighted.

Q#2. I went to security Keyguard Function, put it "on"... tried to add
    a PIN/Security number... 5 digits (not aware I needed 5 numbers), and
it sitll did not work. Error message of some kind.

Q#3 Tried once again to use the keypad Unlock/Lock feature. In the
past it has worked, kind of (with a little experimentation and waiting
along time for the display to go into sleep mode). Now for some reason
it has locked up in the "Locked" position. I tried everything to
:Unlock" it (Press Menu and then "*" star key within 1.5 sec) NOTHING
IS WORKING TO UNLOCK IT. I can't ever turn the cell phone off???? So
locked for over 2 hours. I might have to remove the battery and SIM
Chip... and hope it will reset itself?

So that is the story so far...

P.S. I removed the battery and re-installed. Then I powered up the cell
phone... yaaa, I am back in business again. It freed up the "Locked"
keypad. I am not sure I want to try this feature again, until I know
for certain that I can use it and not have any further problems.

BTW, it is one of the major features I need... looks like I might have
to get a holder to prevent the keys accidentally being press and
    turning on the cell phone.

I assume you tried to change your SIM card PIN code, that would not be
related to the Phone Security Code. I hope you did not try too many times to
lock your SIM card. The SIM card PIN code can be 5 digits, even more, even
if it normally is four digits when delivered from the operator.

Do you have the phone manual? If not, go to www.nokia.com as I did.

I believe the default phone security code for Nokia phones is 12345. You can
change that on the security settings menu, access codes.

Now if you go to phone settings menu, you can find the security keyguard
    option:
Security keyguard to set the phone to ask for the security code when you
    unlock the keyguard. Enter the

    security code, and select On.

Note that you already need the 5 digit code when activating this security
keyguard. As the manual says, when you open the keyguard, the phone asks for
    the phone security code.

If the phone keyguard is active, you should always be able to unlock the
keyguard with "menu, star", the phone should also guide you on the display,
if you press some other key, the phone should guide you to press "menu"
first, when you press "menu", it should respond something like "now press
*". Now if you did have the security keyguard on, the phone requests the
security code (once again, the security code is different from the SIM card
    PIN code).

I have difficulties figuring out what exactly your phone now says. When you
say it is in "locked position", do you mean the display reads "locked" or
something? I'm just wondering if you locked the SIM card, don't remember
what you get if you first enter the PIN code 3 times wrong, then the phone
would ask for SIM card PUCK code and if you give that 8 times wrong, the sim
card is lost. Hope you did not enter this sequence.

If the keyguard is simply locked and you can't get it open, perhaps you have
some problems with your keypad, the menu or the star keys are not properly
recognised? You should figure this out from the phone display as explained
    above.

    Anonymous, here is the latest.

I had to once again remove the battery to get to the basic screen (by
passing the locked keys). Clicked on "Menu", "Settings", "Phone
Settings" and set the Automatic Keyguard to "Off" and then set the
Security Keyguard to "Off". Now the cell phone works, but does not
have the feature of "Lock" "Unlock" the keys on the keypad. I know
that I need to set Automatic Keyguard to "On" for this feature to work!
But for now I will leave well enough along.

I just don't have the time to mess around with all this. Maybe later in
the week I will try again and re-read the "on line" manual (much better
then the printer manual). If I still have a problem I just might call
up customer service or leave an inquiry (via e-mail) on the Nokia 6030
    web site.

Anonymous, thank you very much for your help...

Is this your first Nokia phone? The keyguard implementation is just about
the same on all Nokias and it should not be that complicated.

No, you do not need to have the automatic keyguard on to use keyguard, you
can also "manually" switch it on (and off) every time you want. The autolock
should not do more than taking care of automatically locking the keypad when
the phone has not been used for a while (and is in idle).

If you cannot switch keyguard on and off directly from the keypad (without
security keyguard activated), either you are doing something wrong or the
    phone has a problem.

One phone specific feature I think is that on some phones you have the
"menu" key as the centre soft key with the 4-way navigation keys but the
keyguard is operated with the left soft key instead of the menu-key. Don't
know about 6030 but according to the manual, one should use the menu-key
(not the first time the phone's manual would have an error though).

Re: Nokia 6030 A Few Questions

    Hello Anonymous,

Bottom line, the lock/unlock feature using the Menu Key and Star key
works. Second, I now have the PIN Code set up, so need to use my PIN
number to use the phone. (Called Cingular Tech Support).

The on line Manual, is much better then the printer manual. In the
printed manual it did not ever say?? how to type in correct letters
(like when typing in a complete name). Only by trial and error did I
learn how to do this??!! You would think this is one of the main
things people would want to learn about and use.

OK, another Question. I want to add an emergency number, which will
bypass the unlock and PIN codes. How do I enter this; like the
    emergency number "911".

    Thanks,

    Skipper/Sy

This one is easy, with your phone in idle, keyguard locked or not, with or
without the security lock, just dial 911 (and "send"). You will not see the
first two figures on the display as a dialling response but once you hit the
last digit, you will see the full number. The same applies for the "GSM
standard emergency number 112" and depending on the phone, the SIM card, the
region, some other local emergency numbers may work like that too.

The negative side of this is that your phone may accidentally dial 911 in
    your pocket...

Ok, thanks for mentioning that I can use my cell phone for an
emergency, just by dialing "911". Some day I might try "411" or "O"
and see if it works (Metro NYC).

Further, I was not aware of "112" emergency on a cell phone... good to
know. Here is a url with international emergency numbers, FYI.

Ok, thanks for mentioning that I can use my cell phone for an
emergency, just by dialing "911". Some day I might try
"311"(Non-emergency use), "411" or "O" and see if it works (Metro NYC).
