6288 might just be the mainland chinese version of the "westerner" 6280.

The main difference I was able to find (from nokia.com, compare phones) a
    weight difference of 11g.

Both support WCDMA, I've understood that mainland China does not allow 3G on
    their phones?

There is also a difference in the reported memory size, 518 versus 6 Mbytes,
the first one must include a memory card, not a real difference then.

No, but there may be territories where wcdma support is beneficial for a
chinese businessman. Hong Kong or Taiwan, possibly?

    Maybe not.

The only difference is the design, they both run the same software, with
    the same features.

I did not mean that WCDMA service is not available in China, instead I've
understood it is not allowed to sell a phone that supports WCDMA (generally
a technology that has not been approved there) in China. Can anybody confirm
    this, or prove otherwise?

I guess they would need to allow visitors to bring their UMTS phones when
roaming. A Chinese businessman could perhaps by one for himself but not from
China, I assume (to clarify). Not claiming that a WCDMA phone could not be
useful for him, perhaps more of that in Japan.

I guess Hong Kong and Taiwan could be open if mainland China is a no-no.

I've brought my wcdma phone with me to mainland China.

Dunno. Don't they have a different 3G/2.8G in Japan?

They have now converted to a compatible system in Japan. Tried to come
before others, and did, but the cost was non-compatibility with the rest of
the UMTS world (one might claim that they actually came a lot later than
    others).
