Hi everyone,
Anyone tell me anything about HSCSD? I'm looking to use this on 02, as from
what I see it gives fast transfer speeds - we're sending files inc. photos,
so speed is everything.
When I spoke to o2, they said they knew about GPRS but weren't sure about
this, but it was probably the same thing.
Nokia ( using a 6310i ) lists WAP, GPRS and HSCSD, so I'm guessing it isn't
the same.
Any ideas? I'm looking to get a bolt on to try this service out, but like I
say o2 weren't actually sure of what it was!
Regards,
Dave.

Thanks Neil!
What are the speeds I can expect from GPRS then, any idea?
Thanks,
Dave.

Thanks Neil,
Hmm. So my choice is stick with 42k at best, or more if I switch to
Orange - is that right?

No.
From the Orange web site:
Orange High Speed Data operates at up to 28.8kbps
So HSCSD is slower than GPRS

Re: HSCSD on 02?
OK, the stated limits are 28.8 for HSCSD; 42K for GPRS...........but do u
ever come close to them on peak hour usage (5-8pm)?

As I understand GPRS, GPRS (the technology itself, I suppose it'll vary
depending on how the network service providers implement it) can
theoretically manage about 171.2Kbps (ideal conditions using Coding Scheme-4
and 8 timeslots), which would be nice. Realistically speaking, it only gets
up to around 40-ish Kbps in general use. No idea how it varies with peak
time though (although I'd be interested to hear).

Re: HSCSD on 02?
Thanks everyone,
Interesting, that info - I appreciate it!
I'll give it a whirl and see how it goes, I can get a GPRS bolt on easily
enough and try the project for a month!
Regards,
Dave.

I was refering to gprs, not hsd. 14.4 at normal call charges, 28k is a
little more.

Re: HSCSD on 02?
just one point to note O2 gprs is free at the moment untill further notice.

See

As I understand it on GPRS individual packets can travel quite quickly, but
you are not guaranteed any bandwidth, so for transferring a lot of data
reliably this is not the best solution.
Orange HSCSD only runs at 28.8k (half the maximum quoted for my 6310i) but
you do get allocated bandwidth so you should hopefully see a true 28.8k most
of the time.
My initial speed test of HSCSD came in at about 23k download and 20k upload.

Hi,
Thanks for that, I appreciate it.
Looks like it'll do the job I'm after - it's never going to be big, single
file transfers more like small packets of data, biggest probably about 300k
at one go.
Also planning to use *rarely* for checking / sending urgent mails whilst out
of the office.
You use cable or IR, out of curiosity?

Is it really? Great, even better if that means I can trial it without buying
a bolt on at this stage.
I see o2 are doing a free 6310i, free bluetooth headset and a 100min/month
plan for 16.99, which also includes 1mb of data a month.
This might be good too as I know we can buy group MB at a decent enough rate
frm them, so there's another avenue for us to consider!

Hi Ray,
I'm just looking to see if that's still the case - where did you get this
from, I don't see any mention of free GPRS on o"'s site.
