I bought a generic USB data cable (i.e. not the Nokia one) and I am having
    problems.

I am sure the cable is the right one and it comes with a driver disk.

My computer appears to recognise the cable and I can install the driver. The
computer calls the port COM port 4 rather than USB - I do not know if this
    relevant.

I then have problems as the computer will not acknowledge that the phone is
    connected.

I am using the Nokia software that came with my phone but I have tried it
with a trial downloaded version of Nokia PC Suite.

Should I be using different software or am I doing something wrong?

Nokia PC suite only recognises the genuine datacable or IR for some reason,
i believe, possibly signifying itself over MBUS... correct me if i'm wrong,
    though.

Re: 6100 USB data cable problems

I had the same problem, even though I'm using the original DKU-5.

    Here's what I did:

It apeears that you have to follow the instalation process almost
religously! Here's EXACTLY how it worked:

You install the cable software from the disc.
Then connect the cable ONLY, and not the phone, windows recognises the cable
(I have port 6, even though it's USB), and installs software, then install
the nokia software and connect the phone.

You can use the installation of Logo manager to try to detect your phone,
the installation will tell you wich ports are in use, and which one has the
    phone on it.

Keep in mind that a certain program will not detect the phone if another
program is open! For example, in order to use oxygen phone manager, I had to
    shut down nokia connection manager.

    Now it works fine.

Hope it helps and I'm not babling..
