NEWS: Nokia Has Sights Set On Digital Camera Domination
Nokia is ramping up production of mobile phones containing cameras, and
predicts it could soon become the world's biggest manufacturer of digital
cameras.
The plans are part of the Finnish handset maker's strategy to focus more on
"imaging" products.
Nokia chief executive Jorma Ollila told analysts late last week that the
company intends to make cameras a part of nearly every kind of Nokia phone
by the second half of 2004. A company representative said that represents a
"significant" expansion from the current line-up, which includes 12 Nokia
phones that are capable of taking still photographs and recording 15-second
videos.
A Nokia representative said: "We see it as inevitable that convergence of
mobility and imaging will happen. Mobility boasts a number of benefits for
imaging, as the device is with the user wherever he goes."
Camera phones were first introduced in Japan about three years ago, and have
since become so popular that some market analysts believe they've started
outselling digital cameras. Nokia believes it could become the biggest
digital camera manufacturer globally in 2003. Ollila said: "We want to be
driving this phenomenon very strongly."
Like most other handset makers, Nokia is designing phones to take advantage
of a growing demand for services such as MMS, which allows emails to carry
attachments such as documents, sound recordings or movie clips. MMS is
expected to generate billions in extra revenue for carriers worldwide by
2005, analysts say.

Re: Nokia Has Sights Set On Digital Camera Domination
Nokia doesn't care about whether or not the phone has a camera, an actual
phone, or a smelly yak inside their phones.
they have very little consideration for anything except what it looks like,
and what colour it is - and even then it means they try to build the most
outlandish weird and anti-user design they can. Nokia's design team has
nothing to do with Finland anymore - it all happens at some fashion artists
poncy studio in Paris. why have a photo on your passport when you can have a
portrait by Picasso? nokia made some great looking, useful handsets. 6310i,
8910. but instead, they put forward the 3650 and 7600 - something that looks
stupid, and sacrifices ease of use for 'art'. I can accept that a phone's
looks are important to some people, but not at the price of being able to
use it.
hmm, mobile phones are outselling digital camera's??? wow didn't expect that
one. who would have guessed that more people would buy a phone than a
camera. statistics prove us wrong again. if phones start outselling ironing
boards are they going to build them into phones aswell?
note that 'imaging' doesn't mean video - which means they are going to
continue to ignore the videophone market, and give us more MMS. In contrary
to the last paragraph, MMS has absolutely nothing to do with email - its a
pointless add on to SMS, with less than half of the capabilities of email.
they could have had it much easier building email into the phones, and
giving us a decent universal standard, rather than creating a new standard
with some very severe shortcomings. they haven't even developed MMS much,
since half the nokia handsets cannot cope with audio - meaning an entire
third of the standard is hardly used.
Nokia suck. my next phone cannot be a nokia, since I intend to move on to 3G
like I should have done last year, and since nokia don't make a 3G phone,(
the 6650/7600 do not support video calling - so are utterly useless) how do
they expect to sell phones? are they going to be happy with making the old
generation, and then folding up the company when GSM becomes completely
obsolete? (it is being phased out now).
Find me Nokia's teeth so I can kick them.

Last night's Watchdog:
3G users could rarely make 3G calls.
2G call quality sucks.
25-30 wait to get through to customer services.
Good luck.

I think Nokia domination of the mobile phone market is coming to an end. In
future they are going to get some stiff opposition (especially from a
resurgent Sony Ericsson), I mean look at the keypads! (7210) what the hell
are they thinking of?
Nokia phones are nothing special, its all fancy clip-on covers and
ringtones. In five years time Sony Ericsson will be market leader, thanks to
sexy new phones like the P900

SONY ERICSSON MAKES SEXY PHONES, BUT I HAVE OWNED ALL THEIR LATEST
RELEASES AND DESPITE HAVING GREAT FEATURES AND A FANTASTIC GUI, THE
RECEPTION ON THEIR PHONES SUCKS ACROSS THE BOARD!
(Sony: t68, 616) (Nokia: 6200)
AND I'VE DONE MY OWN AD HOC CONTROLLED STUDY SWAPPING MY SIM CARD FROM
MY SONYS TO MY NOKIAS IN MY HOUSE. THE DIFFERENCE IN SIGNAL STRENGTH
AND THE ABILITY TO CONNECT OR MAKE A CALL WAS SIGNIFICANT!
GO TO ANY SONY ERICSSON FORUM AND DO A SEARCH ON GOOGLE FOR SONY
ERICSSON RECEPTION ISSUES - YOU WILL BE OVERWHELMED.
I WANT SO BAD FOR SONY PHONES TO WORK BECAUSE THEY ARE FEATURE RICH
AND THOUGHTFULLY DESIGNED ON THE OUTSIDE. THE GUTS? THEY JUST DON'T
HAVE THE PERFORMANCE!
NOKIA? SEXY? NO. BUT, YOU CAN'T KILL THEM.
KIND OF LIKE WIVES - YOU WANT THE HOT, SEXY, DUBIOUS ONE OR THE OLD
FAITHFUL IN THE PLAIN-JANE WRAPPER?

I will have to argue the Sony ericsson signal strength difference being
significant.
having used the the nokia 3590 over 4 months and the sony T306. i must
say the T 306 has better signal strength. I am on the AT&T GSM service
which is not very good in new jersey. I will agree the GUI is great
sony. i used ericsson while using att TDMA service and the signal
Strength was second to none. The more expensive nokia may have an edge
over the pricier ericsson. but i think that something sony will fix soon.

"Sexy phones"? All Sony-Ericsson phones look like square bricks.
Including that one. They look like 70s East-European cars, all boxy.
Say what you will, but looks (as well as brand) also matter to people
when they are selecting a phone from a selection with similar
features. Second comes their experience with the brand (ie. if their
Nokias or Ericssons keep breaking up, they wov not to buy another
mobile from the same company). Most mobile phone buyers are not techno
geeks who care only about features they are never going to use anyway.
Heck, people buy even cars based on color and looks.
