Is there any way to set a repeat alarm which goes off at the same
time each day on an 8310?

Yes. Goto Calender (Menu 8) Choose meeting, give it a name, time of alarm,
ect. Then once set, goto Options and choose "Repeat" and select "Daily"

Good idea, but only if the phone is left switched on and not on a 'silent'
    profile.

The proper 'alarm' itself always sounds, even if the phone is switched off, or
    set to silent.

And it's annoying that with the good interface and features nokia provide, that
they don't give a more powerful alarm, that repeats if required, has different
times for different days eg weekends, and maybe more than one alarm can be
    active at any one time.

At the end of the day it's only a phone for making and recieving calls. All
the other features are extras, most of them hardly used by the majority of
people. Without trying to be patronising, a separate alarm clock would suit
    your needs better.

I would have agreed with you in the case of many other phone models
but the 8310 does not have that many useless/fancy features. Most of
what it has is fairly functional.

OK, so the games are for some but not others but a lot of the rest of
the phone is pretty straightforward stuff.

I use my 8310 for all sorts of alarms which an alarm clock or watch
    couldn't manage. :-)
