Instead of pinging yahoo.com. Symantec operates a ping server for just
    that purpose at ping.symantec.com

You're right. When the connection is made, I get a Windows notification
that says: "SprintPCS now connected. Speed: 230.4 Kbps."
However, that is the laptop-to-modem speed. To get the actual network
speed I took the speed test at http://sfo.speakeasy.net :

    2003-11-22 23:28:15 EST: 103 / 56
Your download speed : 103614 bps, or 103 kbps.
    A 12.6 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 56393 bps, or 56 kbps.

This is with a Samsung VGA1000.

Ah. Interesting though that the VGA1000 does that laptop-to-modem
speed, whereas my Sanyo USB drivers only allow 115,200 (the max speed of
    a regular serial port).

103 kbps is not bad at all.

I do not travel enough (6-7 trips/year) to justify maintaining a data plan,
but it would be convenient to occasionally check the email while in the car.
I have a Sanyo 4700 (non-Vision). If I get one of the old PCS Wireless Web
Connection serial cables for this phone, can I use it like a modem to call
my ISP computer for these occasions. THanks, larry

YES you can. Used to do it with my 4700. And now do with my 5150.
