coverage in kauai?

Anybody been to (or currently lives in) Kauai recently? The coverage
map on the SPCS web site isn't that detailed. How is the coverage on
the northshore, around princeville, hanalei bay, etc?

Coverage in Hawaii? If your anywhere except the middle of Honolulu IT SUCKS!
Verizon is the native telephone provider in the area. I recently did a
"remote" from Kapaa and the staff all had their "comped" Sprint phones. NONE
of them worked reliably! My Nextel worked well as did my Archwireless 2-way
Pager. One guys ATT phone worked non stop from Princeville to Poipu with no
problem. Verizon's 1X high-speed data works very well there as well. As far
as Sprint goes..your going to be pretty much "**** out of luck", but thats
the way Sprint is in most of Southern California anyways...so its nothing
new.....Eddie

Regarding Honolulu (and Oahu), I have not been disappointed when I have been
there. The only time that I recall having to even remotely roam was way up
on the north side of the Waianae mountains (not being a kam`aiana, it is
tougher for me <g>) close to Kaena Point. Otherwise, I have gotten good
coverage down the other side of the Waianae along Farrington and up Makaha
Valley.

I have ot disagree with the poster here. The Signal is not crap. It is
just not as widely covered as one would think. We recently took a 7
day cruise of the Hawaiian Island. We went to Kauai, Maui, Hawaii.
Anchored off shore, I got pretty good signal about 1/2 mile out.
Driving on Ohau, had signal for most part outside. Inside building was
iffy.

I also have a sprint Air Card and very seldom had any problem using it
in any of the ports we were in.

In conclusion, the signal is fllable but not as bad as the previous
poster would have believe.

I stayed in Hanalei on Kauai in October 2002. There is SPCS coverage in
Lihue and Kapaa and nowhere else. This is also shown on the tower maps at

An SPCS dual-band phone can roam on Verizon's 800 CDMA and analog
coverage in Princeville and Hanalei from a tower just west of the

I have Sprint here in So. California and it works very well. It's also
not that bad in Hawaii. Obviously you don't know what you're talking
about.

were any of you guys able to use SPCS in Princeville?

eddie - did any of your guys have signal using SPCS driving from
princeville to poipu?

any other comments on kauai's SPCS coverage welcome and appreciated.

Like I said, if you set your phone's roaming setting to "Sprint only" it
won't work in Princeville. If it's a dual-band phone and you set it to
Automatic, it will roam on Verizon.

Whether you are charged for these roaming minutes depends on whether
your plan has the "Free & Clear America" option or some other similar
roaming option.

Make sure your phone's PRL is current before you go. Call *2 and say to
Claire "PRL update". Ask the rep to "please flag my phone for a PRL
update" and he or she will do so and give you instructions to call *2
again and follow the prompts.

If Sprint has suddenly added coverage on the north shore without
changing the tower or coverage maps, then enjoy it and please tell us
about it on your return.

SPCS worked (and NOT well) at the Lihue airport and somewhat in Kapaa ( the
mexican restuarant) in the center of town. It DID NOT work inside the
resorts. They could NOT make or receive calls in or outside the resort at
Princeville.They missed a great many calls and got late voicemail notices on
their handsets. They did not try it up the center of the island. When we had
to call the station they used my Nextel or the program manager's ATTWS
phone. Even tho he can have a FREE Sprint phone and account, he has found
that when traveling he can not count on it working, so he carries a ATT
phone. Personally speaking I have Verizon, due to the fact it works even
better than ATT, Sprint, Nextel and Chingaular in SOuthern Calif and when I

Yeah..right Larry...I'm clueless. Try setting your handset to Sprint only
and turn on the audible indictor that tells you your out of range. Then you
will see what ****ty service they have in Southern Calif. Maybe you just
dont make any calls or no one calls you? If thats the case your with the

I always have my phone set to Sprint PCS only and am never out of
range here unless I'm on the 241 toll road for part of the way. Big
deal, most carriers don't work on that stretch. The only other place I
used to not have a signal was the I-5 thru Camp Pendleton in San Diego
but now that is well covered. And yes I make plenty of calls.

Just out of curiosity Eddie, what phone are you using, it's PRL & firmware
versions, and where you've noticed the problems?

I'm asking as quite a few folks here have piped in, mentioning improved
coverage all over So. Cal, here in this news group over the past 3 months.

Lastly, have you considered adding the F&CA option to your account?
