I-75 Coverage in Southern KY

I was driving South on I-75 over thanksgiving and I noticed I picked up a
sprint signal near London, KY for the first time ever. Now a couple of days
later when I was heading north on I-75 through London, KY I couldn't pick
the signal up again.

Are they adding new towers in that area and/or are they having trouble with
them?

I don;t know about new towers, but strangely enough, there are towers
(which have been up or 1 l/2years) in pineville, ky, and middlesboro,
as well as 2 towers further south on hwy 25 in the Tazewell/Harrogate
area There are essentially in the middle of nowhere). WEre you able
to make a call on the signal you got In London-There are numerous area
with the above mentioned towers, where I can get a good signal
indication on a sanyo 4900, but still be too far from the tower for
the phone to make a connection. Also, I don't believe the tower maps
on sprintpcs for a while in early November, indicated any present or
future towers in the area you mentioned--but lets hope so.

You could have just picked up a fluke stray signal from a tower far away.

Please let this be true...and please let it be on the right SID!

I thought this might be some new coverage turned up to meet buildout
deadlines, but London is covered by SPCS's Louisville MTA license,
which has obviously been built out as much as required, so that isn't
it. It's very possible that SPCS is finally getting off their @$$ as
far as this glaring coverage hole goes... If the coverage came and
then went away, it's probably tower testing...London is really way too
far away from existing SPCS coverage and separated by terrain from
both Berea and Middlesboro for it to be just "stray signals".

Hopefully SPCS will run this area under the Louisville SID and not the
Knoxville SID (like they are doing in Middlesboro ) so that VZW
customers can use it! (VZW customers with current PRLs roam on
Ramcell, which is going CDMA in KY like they have in their markets in
NC and OR but is roaming on AC plans.)

A litte OT, but I would hope, and have seen some evidence of former (solid)
roam areas under AC that were analog go to FreeRoam on AC when they get
overlayed with CDMA. Perhaps the ability of the roaming partner to carry
more traffic under CDMA compels them to offer cheaper bulk roaming rates to
VZW - as does VZW's constant 'threat' of pulling the roaming agreement.
There is probably some point of roam rate, which, of course, varies market
to market with customer demand, that allows VZW to add that carrier to a
moderate 'buy down' plan model such as AC and continue to offer AC at
profitable rates.

I don't think it was a fluke signal from some far away tower. I had full
signal and could make and receive calls perfectly. I noticed there were a
few other random spots with service on I-75 that didn't have it in the past.
But once again this service disappeared when I returned a few days later.

I was told by a Sprint PCS rep at a sprint store that they were planning on
adding 75 new towers between richmond, ky and nashville, tn to fill in the
huge service gap along I-75. This is suppose to take place in the next few
months so I'm wondering if they have a few towers up already and are testing
them out. Then again I don't trust anything sprint reps tell me until it
actually happens. I've heard to many untrue claims over the years from
them.

What do you think about using a sprint sid in your verizon handset, in
the Ky area mentioned above?(was in an old prl, removed, but still
works.)

The Louisville Verizon store said they are planning to have I-75 covered in
the next six months, (for what that is worht) :> so maybe its part of their
coverage or Sprints
and one or the other is testing signals. Digital was turned on four months
in my area before they
allowed people to use it.
