    Hi all,

Looking to replace our (my wife and mine) LG5250's of nearly two
years. I want SMS, not the god-awful Short mail.

Question ONE: Any of the current phones "SMS-ready" and when, if at
all, does SprintPCS plan on rolling this out? I've checked out the
VM4500 online (not in person) and it looks like a sweet machine - but
I've never owned Sanyo. That said, nobody had heard of LG a few years
ago and I went for that and it has been a great phone.

    Question TWO: We're long-time subscribers (6 or 7 years?) and I'm
wondering if there's ANY possible way to avoid getting jammed up the
ass with that giant black dildo of a full-price on new phones.
Cynically speaking, I'm thinking I should be able to use # portability
to quit and rejoin SprintPCS, and get the damn phones for a decent
    price.

Stupid question here. What is SMS? I've seen tithe term more and more lately
but not sure exactly what it is.

ONE - Sanyos are great phones. Browse this newsgroup and you'll hear
that over and over, including for the newest VM4500. And read the
threads here about this phone - I believe it's SMS ready. The Nokia
    3588i is SMS ready.

Try the advanced search of groups.google.com for alt.cellular.sprintpcs
and you can hone in on lots of good info that's already been posted in
    the past month or so.

TWO: many posters here, including myself, who have had the same handset
for 18 months have called *2 and received $100-130 off a new handset.
Call and ask. Or ask at a Sprint PCS store (not a third-party store).

The VM4500 is SMS-ready. The service has NOT yet rolled out, but when
it does, the phone will do it.

Really? I've heard nothing but bad things about LG.

That said, I've used Sanyo's for years now, and they are truly great
phones... they will probably blow away the performance of those LGs you
have. I highly recommend the VM4500, I have it and love it.

You say you've head your phones for two years. This is good. Sprint
will give you the promotional new-subscriber price on a new phone as
long as you've had your old LG phones for at least 18 months. You WILL
have to renew your contract though (two years, I think).

Not necessary, if you've owned the LGs for as long as you say you have.

Which is better? The Sanyo 8100 or the 5300. The VM4500 is a little out of
my range. And what about the Samsung VI660 and VGA1000? Does anyone have one
of those phones? I would like to get some feedback on those four. I am
considering upgrading to a new one.

SMS is aiming about about mid-month right now. Still some=20
ironing out to do, from what I heard, so nothing's set in=20
    stone right now.

And that VM4500 is one *sweet* device. The only thing=20
missing is PDA functions, and it's even got rudimentary=20
    versions of that.

There used to be a plan called "Technology Assurance." I=20
thought it was awesome. Sign on for a 2-year agreement,=20
and get a service credit at the end good towards the=20
purchase of a phone. It was all but cancelled when I was=20
hired on, and then the official axe fell shortly after=20
    that.

Now there's the "Handset Upgrade Program." Not too bad. =20
18 months on one device, account in good standing, and you=20
qualify. Unfortunately, you *still* pay full price up=20
    front. The rebates are mail-in.

LG phones are absolute pieces of garbage. If you think you have a great
phone just get a Sanyo... ANY Sanyo. You'll see that just because your
phone worked and it was your only Sprint phone you've had experienced with,
that it wasn't a great phone

Samsung are half way decent but do not compare at all with Sanyo. You'll
find very little difference between the 8100 and 5300 as far as call clarity
and signal strength ( but some people say the ear piece on the 5300 is hard
to hold just right against your ear.. i never had that problem).

The 8100 can take pics faster is about the only thing that would make me pic
it over the 5300.. the 5300 has a flash but it's worthless... so flip a coin
and get either you won't be disappointed.

Agreed. A couple of other differences is that with the 8100, you can attach
a voice message with the picture. On the 5300, it has zoom capabilities, 4x
    & 16x.

I had both, and I liked the 8100 better. The 5300 has a
higher-resolution camera (640x480), however I found it wasn't very good
at adapting to lighting, and mine had a fish-eye lens effect that I
didn't like too much. The 8100's camera is 320x200 or thereabouts, but
seemed to take better quality pictures. it's also smaller and the
battery life was better than the 5300.

Just be aware: the 8100 and 5300 do not have true SMS capability. Not
sure if you were the person asking for that.

Short Message Service. Think phone-centric email, and you're in the
ballpark. You could also think of alpha-numeric pagers. Long a hit with
foriegn markets, esp Asia and some parts of Europe, SMS is beginning to
take off with domestic mobile users. While most US carriers began
offering one-way text in the second-half of the 90's two way text has
been slow to mature, with US callers preferring voice service to the
    clunky interfaces afforded them.

My understanding of the situation is this:
Sprint supports SMS via WAP or html. Essentially, it's a web site
stand-in for an integrated SMS service. The SMS messages are real, and
work with other SMS carriers. They're just as real as the emails you
send with Hotmail - the email is real, even if you never see SMTP, POP3,
IMAP, or any of their friends directly. For that matter, there's little
reason that current SPCS Vision phones couldn't download a full-featured
SMS app. I've send SMS messages directly from the handset via vision
back when I was using a Treo 300. There was a thrid party developer that
patched the text message app, adding a send button. It was much cooler
than what I found when I switched to my A500... Talk about a let down, I
    was expecting better SMS!!

So, the answer seems to be that it depends on how you define "real" SMS.
