updating your phone software...

if i buy a new phone, can they update the software at that time, or is it
necessary to actually have the phone on (which would mean charging it first
and all that)? or would a newly purchased phone be updated to the newest
software already (in the box), even if it is an older phone?

"Technically" they should be able to do it!

Especially if it is a new phone, it should come with the latest
software and PRL. That may not be true with a phone that has been out
for 4 months. If you read the manual, it says to 'charge it fully
first' before 'using' it. Doesn't downloading new software fall under
the 'using' category? Check for the PRL version and if it is lower
than 10021, you needed to call *2 for a 'PRL Update'. There was a
website that listed the latest phone software versions, but I don't
have it anymore.

Also.... I offer a differing opinion on "Especially if it is a new phone, it
should come with the latest software and PRL..." Depending on build-out, and
roll-out schedules, I would never assume that...I am a 'cynic' in this area
(hardware/software levels and it is NOT just SPRINT, it is all HW/SW) ...
the first version out of the box is the real 'beta'. in the real world...
the next level is the real 'production' version...
Moral of the story....Always check for updates, when you get the device and
every few months afterwards!

I always thought the ".. 'charge it fully first' before 'using' it.." is
because the battery has enough life in it to get in 'authorized and that's
it!..However, if you are in the store and on 'house power' that should be a
moot point... However once updated... then yes. take it home and fully
charge the battery...
In the case of the 5100, my advice would be once the one battery is charged,
then swap batteries and bring the second one up to full charge!
