when 'true SMS' is released, does this mean that i can send and receive text
messages without having to use the internet/vision, etc.? it will just
appear on my phone and i can type/send a reply?

also, and more importantly, does this work with other services, like
cingular, as well, or is it just a sprint thing? most of my friends use
other services and they already have messaging, so i can begin to use SMS
with them after it's available for sprint?

Supposedly, it will be messages to anyone. Email addresses, cell phones,
    hand-held device addresses, etc.

You'll pay, one way or another. Here's the basics, although I haven't=20
    seen actual numbers:

Phones with Vision service will have a certain number of SMS messages=20
included with their Vision pack. Unlimited messaging will be a small=20
    add-on (although, as I said, I haven't seen numbers, $5 has seemed a=20
pretty popular number with those who set such things of late).

Phone like the Nokia or the LG1200 once it's upgraded, or phones without=20
a Vision pack will pay a fee for a certain number of messages, or a=20
    slightly higher fee for unlimited.
