How does sprint determine what the waranty replacement time frame is
on a phone. If say, bought a newly introduced phone on ebay, obviously
phoneis less than a year old but, if not bought directly from sprint,
what happens?

The warranty is honored by the place you purchased the phone or the
manufacturer, not the service that it is on. At least that's what I would
think. Think about it this way: If you owned a company like Sprint and
someone bought a phone from Joe Blow Cell Phones three blocks away, even if
it was a Sprint phone would you want to give warranty service on that phone
if there was something wrong with it? If it were me I would offer to see if
the phone was OK but if there was anything wrong I would send him on his
way.

I believe you're right. For example, Radio Shack (Verizon and Sprint authorized
agent) carries their own warranties.

No, not for Sprint phones generally. Read the Warranty section of your
manual, and you will find (for most/all models of Sprint phones) that Sprint
itself is the actual warrantor of the phone (*not* Sanyo, Samsung, or other
manufacturer). Hence, you can and should ordinarily take your Sprint phone
to a Sprint store, regardless of where you purchased it, for warranty
service. Sprint reportedly determines the expiration of the warranty by the
date the phone was first activated on Sprint's service.
There are at least two exceptions to this:
1) If you received or purchased a better service plan from the seller (e.g.,
Costco or Best Buy), you are free to take the phone there instead.
2) If you purchased your phone from Radio Shack, Sprint will reportedly
"ask" you to take the phone back to Radio Shack first. Reportedly, Radio
Shack does not give out replacements immediately but rather sends your phone
back someplace to be examined and "repaired" (yeah right). The bottom line
is that I see no reason why you should accede to Sprint's "request" in this
case. If the manual says that Sprint is the warrantor, then Sprint has to
fix or replace the phone, period, whether Radio Shack "likes" it or not.

Lawarence, I had thought what you explained was right, ---about the
only carrier that uses sanyo now is sprint--I will find out later in
the week, and let you know.

We base warranty service on the date a phone was first activated. So,=20
if it was used, warranty coverage began on the day the previous account=20
covered.
The warranties are manufacturer warranties, but we play the part of an=20
agent on the manufacturer's warranty.
