I own a Sanyo 4900 and I like it very much, however,I only need a phone that
is only a phone.
Don't need Email, Voice services, Calendars, Downloads, and Web......Can
these items be removed from the phone??? I know..."Dumb Question"...
Thanks

Not dumb... Just kinda dumb! <g>
There's no way to remove these functions from the phone... The answer
is just don't use them. (I'm assuming you don't pay for Vision.)
I, too, use the phone just as a phone (and, occasionally, as a modem).
The idea of different ringers, screen savers, etc. absolutely eludes me.
Take care!

As Larry pointed out, no ... you can't as it's part of the firmware of the
phone. You might take a look at the Nokia offered by SPCS, but that has the
same features you mention above.
Just use the phone as a phone, and don't worry about it ...

Screen savers are somewhat silly. Different ringers, well, that does
make sense. Some people find themselves in the presence of other cell
phone owners on a regular basis. By setting your own ringer, you can
stop the "Is it mine, or yours? I don't think it's mine. Hold on. Hello?
No, it must be yours." routine.
That's not to say that there's more effort invested in ringers than
strictly necessary. My first phone had six ringers, and each sounded
like a phone. My newest phone has some silly number of ringers, one of
which sounds like a chicken.

No. Of course, removing those features wouldn't make the phone smaller
or lighter, so there's no disadvantage to leaving them in there. It's
actually not a bad thing - your phone has to have a display, some
buttons and a certain amount of processing power. With very low capacity
memory chips falling out the market, they tend to buy chips that support
larger firmware. So, many of the features are things your phone's
hardware is capable of doing anyway. The Nokia 3588i is probably the
simplest phone currently in the Sprint lineup. Not much smaller or
lighter than the Sanyo 4900 anyway. Even there, you'll find three games,
calendar, over a dozen ringers, a color screen, and a number of
(non-animated) wallpapers.
I'll trade a Qualcomm QCP-2700 for your Sanyo 4900 though. My Qualcomm
has less than 20 minutes lifetime useage on the timer, and has a
monochrome display, six ringers, all of which sound like a phone. It's
dual-band, tri-mode, and places phone calls. It has no games, no
browser, no planner, no alarm clock. It does show the time.

Different ringers, I understand. But, listening to entire songs, while
the owner takes his/her time answering the call, drives me nuts!
I must admit, I *do* get a kick out of Samsung's Crazy Chicken... It's
my voicemail indicator! <g>

My phone's my everything: phone, pager, email, web away from home,
security blanket in case of emergency, etc. Even cable TV on the road
these days.
The one thing I never thought I'd need is different ringers. Then I got
the idea that I wanted to know without looking if it was my girlfriend
calling. I attached a ringer of her favorite music. When I hear "Paint
It Black," I know it's her.
One thing led to another, and now a lot of important people in my life
have their own ringer. Most of the time I don't even have to take the
phone out my pocket to know who's calling (and if I'm going to answer).
Such things can be troublesome, though. I used to use Sanyo's Crazy
Chicken as my main ringer. Then one day I was riding the bus, and there
were some seedy characters getting rowdy. Wouldn't you know it? Off
went the crazy chicken. There were a few tense moments before I was able
to assure them I wasn't making fun of them.
The chicken was retired.
