So I'm in the Orlando, FL area, and I have 2 PCS phones with a shared
account for a little over a year now.

My frustration is that *frequently* our cell phone will not ring - even
while the phone indicates it has a strong digital network connection. It
seems to go through periods of "unresponsiveness", where it is not connected
to the network and isn't aware of incoming calls or messages. If you make an
outgoing call, apparently at that point you get connected to the network,
and suddenly you will get all these messages from your missed calls. This
isn't just me - I've heard this from a few other people who work at my
office with PCS - same exact situation. They often make an outgoing call
just to make sure they're "connected to the network", and feel they must
just get kicked off from time to time (our theory, at least). But the phones
give no indication - they don't show their typical "looking for service"
info or anything like that (which I would be happy with). This problem is
easily reproducible, especially first thing in the morning. I have both
phones in front of me and can have one call the other, it wont ring, and
eventually kick me into voice mail. Sometimes I'll get disconnected during a
call, and immediately call back, and the other phone won't ring.

This is a huge problem. The phone is no good for emergencies, because people
cannot reliably get a hold of you. And using cellphones exclusively becomes
a frustrating process (I really like just getting messages 5 minutes after
somebody called; even though I've been sitting with my phone waiting for the
call). This particular behavior only happens with SprintPCS (around here at
least). Happily, my year commitment with sprint is over.

But, I'm still puzzled, why does it do this? Nobody at Sprint has been able
to answer the question or help.

    Tx

    1) Have you had you phone diagnosed @ a SPRINT store? I was having similar
problems REGULARYLY with my son's phone , an A460. It failed multiple
diagnostic tests and has now been replaced under warranty and the problem is
    for the most part gone!

    2) It would help when you post if you include make, model, and age of phone.
and if possible, the software and hardware levels (There is usually a menu
item to display these, varies phone to phone!)

    2)
I don't want to steal someone else's "thunder" but a couple of years ago,
another person, posted a GREAT explanation of one reason why the phone may
not ring. I have respost the link to his "full answer" next and also repost
his 'short answer', since I have seen him posting in a while!

    http://home.san.rr.com/denbeste/idle.html

    ============================================================================
    =====================

A page (an incoming call) only occurs once or at most twice. Sprint uses
slot cycle 2, which means that the phone wakes every 5.12 seconds to see if
there's an incoming call. Sprint routes an incoming call to voice mail after
probably about 8 seconds, so there's maybe two or probably only one chance
for the phone to receive the page. If it misses it, the call goes to voice
    mail.

So if, during that critical 8 seconds, the signal strength was inadequate,
the page would not get through and the call would be routed to voice mail.

But voice mail indications are sent every slot cycle (unless there's no
excess time available in that slot) until they're acknowledged by the phone,
no matter how long that takes. The system will keep trying indefinitely, for
minutes or hours or days, every 5.12 seconds, as long as it knows that your
phone is online. Maybe it might take twenty times or 5000 times, but
eventually the signal will improve and your phone will receive the voicemail
message. Then the phone will acknowledge it to the system and indicate it to
you with a beep and an icon on its screen.

There's more info about this here:

    http://home.san.rr.com/denbeste/idle.html

In particular, it explains WHY the phone only wakes every 5.12 seconds, but
the brief answer is "to consume less power so that the battery lasts longer
so that you get better standby time".

Oh, and by the way, don't take the "bars" display too seriously. Likely you
missed the call due to inadequate EC/I0 rather than inadequate signal
strength, and EC/I0 which can change radically and rapidly. See:

    http://home.san.rr.com/denbeste/bars.htm

If the EC/I0 value at the time of the page was sufficiently low, your phone
may not have detected the page.

Also, if the reverse channel (phone-to-cell) EC/I0 were sufficiently low, it
might have been that your phone tried to set up a traffic channel and failed
because the cell didn't get the message.

Before your phone can ring, the phone and cell have to set up a traffic
channel, which requires exchanging a couple of messages on the paging
channel. If that fails, the phone call will go to voice mail anyway.

I doubt that's the problem. My SPCS phone does this and it depends on
where in the country I am, not my phone, and not my signal strength
(which is a 6200 and works fine).

Here are some probabilities I noticed:

    (1) in Atlanta it never did this (even though I would often get network
busy when I tried to place a call)
    (2) in L.A. it does it for half the calls (even though I never get
    network busy)
    (3) in San Diego it does it for one-fifth of the calls (again never
    network busy)
    (4) So is no relationship with network busy
    (5) If you have any voicemail in there, the probability goes way up that
    your phone will not ring
    (6) it has nothing to do with signal strength. Obviously you won't
receive a call if you don't have signal strength, but if you do, you can
easily reproduce the problem in LA while being completely stationary and
having 5 bars and an absolutely clear signal. You can have someone right
next to you call you 5 times from another Sprint phone and reproduce the
problem. When I livedin LA this was very frustrating, but then I moved
to Atlanta so I wasn't worried. Now I am in San Diego and Spring has got
    to go.

Re: Why do Sprint PCS Phones often not ring???

Interesting posts - I have not experienced this as far as know. I live in
the Wash DC/Baltmore market and occasionally travel to Philly, Pittsburgh,
LA, San Diego, Seattle, Dallas, Tampa and Orlando areas. I use either a
Samsung I500 or my new Sanyo VM4500. I have contractors in all 50 states
and use the phone a bunch. I have seen very reliable service (including
    voicemail and other PCS features).

Re: Why do Sprint PCS Phones often not ring???

I too have experienced this (not too often but then again I do not use the
    phone often)

I have full signal and nothing. (I was on a land line and had friend dial
it) about 30 seconds to 2 minutes after the call attempt I will get the
Chirp Chirp Chirp of the notification of the call.

if he then tries again it goes through fine.

Very annoying. I do not use it much but I definatly would like to get my
incoming calls. when I am in rocky area ignal wise I can understand but when
I am solid in good territory it is very aggravating.

Not sure how often it happens I get few enough calls that I am not a good
example of this but as little as I use it if I get it enough to bug me I can
only imagine what heavier users experience.

That was the primary reason I've left sprint for T-Mobile.

Incoming calls are my only complaint with Sprint. I too have had the
calls going to VM problem without the phone ringing. It doesn't happen
all that often but it does happen. Maybe one or two out of every 10
calls won't ring. It's not because of lack of signal (got plenty of
that here) and it's not because of the time of day. There's really no
good solid explanation for why this happens. But at the same time
other Sprint customers that I know say it never happens to them. So
the problem seems to be account specific. It affects some customers
but not others. I'm not a heavy user myself and I don't depend on my
wireless phone for everything so it's not really that big of deal to
me if a call doesn't come in once in a while. I will however get
notified of the VM right away. Outgoing calls always work perfectly.

A few possible solutions that I've heard of.

    1) call tech support and get your phone reprogrammed. Basically just
reactive the phone number, home SID, etc on your phone.

    2) ask tech support to perform an account reload. They reload all your
account info into their system just in case something has become
corrupt. This problem would be considered rare but it does happen.

    3) ask tech support to reset your voicemail. They will wipe away
everything and give you a brand new voice mail account. All saved
    messages will be lost.

Whether of not any of this would actually solve the problem is
unlikely but it might be worth a try.

I have had this occur with both sprint and verizon-an incident about 2
months ago, with my new 5400 could make but not receive calls
apparently in the area served by a particular tower, for at least most
of a Sunday aftrnoon--two other's with sprint phones worked normally,
and my phone worked okay when I left the original problem area, and
returned to normal in the orginal area the next day--never reallly
knew why, other than that incident, the 5400 ahs best reception of any
phone I have owned, so I assumed some network glich --I have had
issolated reception problems occur to limited extents over the years,
which I assumed was just overcrowded networks, as it was at most a
temp problem. Over the years, that I have had both sprint and verizon,
I have became away of certain areas along highway(s) I use regularly,
along which I have had calls go to voice mail, and upon calling my own
phone ( I usually have 2 different phones with me), have found
"spotty" call reception(call the other phone, it may ring 2 of 5
calls) (good signal on all phones). My friends make fun of me checking
my main line to see if I can receive calls, at least a couple of
times, if I am either expecting an important call or if I am in say a
new area. traveling, etc.(99% of time it's perfect)

In addition, my first 4900 got or was really bad about missing calls,
in about first week after I got it--it was brand new,so I just took it
back to sprint, who indicated it needed new software-- I dont really
know what the problem was as when I came back to pick it up,the tech
said it was fried or something to that affect, and gave me another new
phone, which never gave any regular problem, other than the normal
    gliches in cell service.

I'll bet you either have a bad phone (s) or it's a network problem,
but then again these really are the only two answers, regardless of
exactly how techincal the problem is.

What kind of handsets do you have, and have you tried another brand--I
am in Orlando 2-3 times a year, and have used sprint there for 5-6
years w/o any known reception problems, but you may be a particular
    area that has reception problems.

Let us know if you find out what the problem is.

Kevin, (and all others who have poseted a reply)

I am curious to know if you leave your phone on 24/7. I had this problem and
when I called sprint about it, they asked if I left my phone on all the
time. I said yes and the tech told me to turn it off for approx 15/20
minutes sometime during a 24 hr period and that will fix the problem.
Apparently, SPCS phones get "confused" if they are talking to the same tower
to too long. I tried this and it worked.

    Hope this helps,

    Chris

That's not it. That's just a stcok answer that customer service will
give you and it might help some people. I always turn my phone off
every night for 8 hours while I sleep. Doesn't make any difference.
But in any event you shouldn't have to turn your phone off once a day.

I agree that turning it off makes no difference.
My phone runs steadily for weeks at a time, with no "confusion".
Mostly, the only time I turn it off is when I fly.
And I used to forget it sometimes even then, too,
so I added "Telephones -- OFF" to my cockpit checklist.

Maybe certain phones, but i know Sanyos don't have this problem. I've
left my phone on for days without a pwoer cycle and have never had this
    crop up.

Of course, now I'm on a SonyEricsson T608, so we'll see if it can keep
its wits about it as well as Sanyo.

    I have a sanyo 6400

I get this issue sometimes. its quite aggravating. I do not make many calls
and recieve even less I would like to get the calls I recieve.

the technical description given DOES make sense. how about sprint fixing it
by altering the interval times to make sure you get a signal of an incoming
    call.

Wish I could outright disable sprint voicemail too.

Same here. My Samsung VGA1000 is off at least 10 hours per day. But
I also have had incoming calls not ring the phone but go to voicemail
eventhough the phone had a full complement of antenna bars showing.

Sprint is the evil empire of false billing, as most know. Sprint
service sucks, their phone staff in India sucks, and their morons in
the store locations suck. The people at Sprint ripped me off, lied to
me, and the list goes on. Sprint will burn a customer any chance they
can get. They will nickel and dime you as long as you have service
with them. They are well know for putting extra charges on you
billing statement and letting fight for your money back on a monthly.
I give the way Sprint deals with customers a ZERO. SPRINT SUCKS.
    Bastards.
