I just opened up the Los Angeles Times and T Mobil is selling 1000 anytime
minutes free nights and week ends for 39.99. There has to be a catch. Is it
    true long distance?
Can you ad a phone to this plan for sharing. Does anyone have this plan? I
sure am tempted to switch from Sprint

I'm only going to say that T-Mobile is by far the worst service here
on the East Coast. I wouldn't care how much they charged. My
girlfriend was stuck with them for a year, and there were times she'd
    have no service for days.

I've had every provider, at least the major ones. I would stay away from
T-mobile if you travel out the LA area, say to the midwest or east coast, I
did this and the service was horrible, the midwest service is focused mainly
in the downtown city area, after that it gets bad, same on east coast when i
was there, as long as I was in a major city it was good, but 30 miles out it
had issues. I had sprint at the same time and switched the t-mobile one to a
$20 a month just until the contract ended. But like everything, what is good
for one person isn't for another, comes down to travel and personal
    preference.

FYI, in California, T-Mobile uses Cingular's 1900 GSM network. In
California, T-Mobile does not operate its own network of cell sites. So
anything good or bad you hear about Cingular's coverage in California
(and also I think for the Seattle & Las Vegas areas) applies equally to
    T-Mobile.

You could browse or search the alt.cellular.gsm.carriers.voicestream
newsgroup for reports on T-Mobile's coverage and service (and
    alt.cellular.cingular for LA coverage).

Re: Should I be tempted.to go from Sprint

I switched to T-Mobile from Sprint about 2 months ago and am thoroughly
impressed with the service. Sprint service was fine, but T-Mobile has been
awesome to say the least. I live in a fairly rural region of Missouri and
have great service in the cities and along the interstates and secondary
highways. T-Mobile's laptop internet speeds are definitely slower than
Sprint's, but it works well and is truly unlimited via laptop (and promoted
as such) unlike Vision. In fact, all plans included free unlimited web
browsing via laptop with some access port restrictions. If you want the port
restrictions removed, it's like $20 extra per month.

Also, T-Mobile's CS reps are knowledgeable and very friendly. Wait times are
usually only a minute or two.

The 1000 whenever minutes with free nights / weekends for $40 is a great
buy. I'd switch my plan to it in a heartbeat if they offered it here.

The "catch" is that its a "Local Plan". If you stay in Los Angeles all
the time, its a good deal, if you travel out of state, (i.e. to Chicago)
then every call is a roaming call.

SprintPCS now has a smililar "Local Plan" of 1000 minutes for $45, all
with long distance from your local calling area. With Sprint for $5
extra you could get 7 PM Nights with your weekends.

    Actually, their new 1000 min./unlimited n&w $40 promotion is a national
    plan.

I've heard that T-Mobile in California and Nevada is also pretty bad -
here they use Cingular's network (and Cingular uses T-Mobile's network in NYC).

I can't confirm or deny this, however; ask T-Mobile customers in the area where
you live for opinions on the service. That's your best bet.

T-Mobile coverage (using the Cingular network) in the San Francisco Bay area
is pretty decent. Both of my kids have been T-Mo subscribers for years.
