I have a friend who has been using a Samsung A460 for over year. She has the
unlimited wireless web plan still, which allows her to check her email on her laptop
using a USB cable. Wireless web is slow, but it's good enough for her needs and the
price is right. She doesn't have a land line, so this is also her only voice phone.
The Samsung is almost dead. The display has failed, so she has to type in all
numbers by hand now, and the net connection also no longer works (although the phone
will answer AT commands).
She would like to buy a used handset from ebay which will be a decent voice phone
and also handle wireless web. She doesn't plan to use vision or any of the newer,
higher-speed data services, and she doesn't plan to stay with Sprint once her
current contract is up in a few months, so she is looking for a very low cost
solution to see her through a few months.
Can anyone recommend phones available for $25-50 that will meet her requirements.
Phone must have infrared data connection (preferred) or data cables still available
for sale. She is hesitant to go with another A460 as the display problem she had
seems to be common with them.
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Best used phone for Wireless Web access
I use a Samsung N300 for the same purposes, voice and wireless web access, but
on a boat. Just bought a spare on eBay for $22 delivered for when this one
dies, but no problems so far, no known generic problems. Serial data cables are
available from Future Dial at
http://www.futuredial.com/FDCart/Pro...pid=717&cid=50 for $29.99,
$20.99 at RatShack, and probably elsewhere. Don't know of anything else
compatible with the A460 cable unless she is willing to take a chance on another
one. But N300 appears pretty bulletproof and price is right.

If she can use serial instead of USB, I'd recommend the Kyocera 2035. It works
well with WW and can readily be found on ebay for $10. Cables should be
still available from Kyocera or I'd sell her mine for cheap.

Those A460's are pieces of ****! I've owned 2 of them and both
succumbed to display issues.
