I've a phone that dying and was interested in buying a phone from sprint.
The last phone I bought from them was in november of 2001.

I just found out that if you buy your own phone, you're disqualified from
any sprint discounts for 18 months.

If I was a new customer, I'd save $180. Be a customer for 4 years and
you can just go and **** yourself.

Spring must be trying to reduce their customer base.

What is "Spring"? Is this a new cell phone service? :-)

No, I don't think so. Only if you buy from Sprint. I thought what you thought
too, but it isn't true of phones you get from other sources; I've checked.

He is correct. Any new phone activation resets the 18month counter.

I had service for 20 months on a phone, then bought my own phone to replace
it (OfficeDepot clearance). A year after that, I called about a credit
towards a new phone, but since the OfficeDepot phone had only been in
service 12 months, I didnt qualify.

If you have service 6 months, and your phone gets replaced due to a warranty
issue? You start over as it is a new NAM activation, even if it is the same
    number or service.

You have to have the same phone unit, 18 months. No matter where you buy it.

Logically, you'd think that was the case. However, I'm pretty sure that
O/Siris has stated several times that the 18 month clock is reset anytime
a new phone is activated, regardless of the purchase source. The only time
it is not reset is when you activate a used (previously activated) phone.

That's not what the asshole at sprint said. He might be completely wrong
and I'll try a different rep, somebody who cares if I leave or not.

"That's not what the asshole at sprint said."

Approach Sprint with that kind of attitude and I can *guarantee*
that they won't care if you leave.

Well, I just replaced my daughter's Samsung A500 with a brand spanking new
LG-325 two weeks ago. I paid full price for the phone @ our local SPCS
store. In checking the rebate qualification page on SPCS's site, it says "
The Sprint PCS Phone activated with this Sprint PCS Phone number meets the
18 month age requirement. Yes "

When I sign onto my account @ SPCS's site and select her phone number, it
shows here new model. So, maybe SPCS has changed their philosophy on what
    qualifies.

I've replaced several phones through Best Buy warranty, doing an ESN
swap. They have never reset the 18 month clock.

That's very strange! The two phones I bought at Costco 17 months ago still
show as not eligible at http://pcshandsetupgrade.sprint.com, becoming
eligible for the handset upgrade next month.

Were the replacements brand new or refurbished? Used/refurbished
replacements don't reset the 18 month clock.

Get over yourself. I'll call an asshole an asshole and it doen't have
anything to do with how the conversation went.
