I don't have a vision plan, I pay as I go. I started using AOL IM recently
and noticed that even when I open the phone after periods of non-use, the
icon is still illuminated to show I am "online." Am I paying for being
"active" or do I only get charged when data starts being transferred back &
    forth?

I'm afraid to see what next month's bill will look like, but please tell me
    what you know.

    Thanks!!!

You don't charged for time on line. You get charged for every kb up or
downloaded through your phone. The icon may have shown up, but was it a
faded color? If so, then it's not accessing the web server. If it's a bright
color, then it was an active internet connection.

The icon is greyed-out, but present nonetheless. I am happy to learn that
it's not costing me anything, because I have had it "online" for several
hours at a time (doing nothing).

    Thanks !!

On Sprint, you'er billed only for data transfers, and then you are
billed by the KB. I beleive it's something like $.01 per kilobyte.

Note that just have the Vision icon on your phone doesn't mean the
connection is "active." A connection taht is faded/greyed out and not
transferring any data is actually considered "dormant."

Well, it still depends on how much use you made out of the service. If
you start using it a lot, those pennies-per-kilobyte start to add up. A
megabyte, or 1,024KB, will run you $10.24. So it really would make
sense to get a Vision pack; in many cases, you can get them for $10 a
    month now.
