Who said anything about comparing? Are you figuring the phone tries to grab
AMPS/800, CDMA/800 and CDMA/1900 all at once? I'm not; I'm figuring it looks
at each in some order and grabs the first decent signal it can find.

Exactly. I thought there was concern that it grabbed the
AMPS signal instead of the (assumably) very strong Sprint
signal. I was saying "so what"

....and then there was the alarmist concern of "what if it
was a digital only phone"...

Without knowledge of exactly how the phone searches for signals in emergency
mode (that's what Nokia calls it), worrying about that kind of thing is
pointless...

3W bagphones with cigarette lighter plugs instead of dead batteries are 99
cents in thrift shops across the country. Drop one in the trunk and forget
buying it service. Bypasses all this PRL nonsense and connects with POWER
to whatever it can hear for that 911 call for the ambulance to save the
kids.

There's one in all my vehicles. I got 8 spares...(c;

Didn't "look" for anything in WalMart.....BEEP - NO SERVICE

If you step outside, you can see the SPCS tower from the front door. The
Alltel tower is behind some trees with AMPS and CDMA on "B" cellular 800.

No excuses....this is dangerous and needs to be STOPPED.

There are no standard pilot channel assignments for the PCS band, so the
PRL tells the phone where to look. The cellular band has standard pilot
channels, since both AMPS and CDMA were used in this band before PRLs
were used. Thus, in 911 mode, the phone has no idea where to look on the
PCS band for systems not in the PRL, but it knows where to look on the
cellular band. I would have thought it could do a brute search, but that
may not be feasible for some reason. The known channels on the cellular
band are a good first place to look.

I still have an old 5190 and the NRM-1 AMPS module that I used
with the old Voicestream, used to love that phone for motorhoming
with, I could get a signal almost everywhere (Oregon) .

I guess its useless now (sigh)............

I always wondered how the NRM-1 module worked. Was it only Voicestream that
supported it? Is it still able to access 911 and the American Roaming
Network (credit card payment)? I guess that the 5190/6190 are not much use
anymore, with more and more GSM on 800 Mhz.

Don't know if only voicestream supported it, but it WILL dial 911 if you have
an amps signal.

I have one of those old bag phones for emergency 911 calls in the MH, you get
some great signal strength with them......
