There are many reasons why there are bandwidth issues with SOME
carriers. Two of the main reasons:
1. Poor technology choices leading to a protracted deployed of multiple
systems requiring multiple bandwidth allocations (AMPS to TDMA to GSM to
W-CDMA)
2. Poor choices in acquiring spectrum, not buying enough of it early and
not having enough capital to buy it later when auction prices soared.
Some CDMA providers have badiwdth issues, too. Verizon has been known
to be tight on available spectrum in a few major markets. This is why
they are the most aggressive when it comes to paying the highest prices
at spectrum auctions and trying to acquire spectrum from bankrupt
companies (i.e. Nextwave). Still others (i.e. T-Mobile) have
compensated for bandwidth shortcomings by simply not upgrading to 3G yet.
