I read an article recently that one strategy in replacing a phone is to ask the company about a refurbished phone, knowing that many of them do not like to publicize their availability.
Does anyone know if Sprint/Nextel sells these in their stores?
I'm just curious, as eventually I might consider replacing my phone but don't want to change my contact. (I'm paying less than the minimum for the exchange program)
Thanks,
Mike

Re: Refurbished phones?
We have a retail store, and we occasionally have a used phone for sale. But
the phones aren't refurbished, just used. I'm not aware of the corporate
stores selling refurbished phones. Understand that some stores will pay you
for your used phone (agps et all), up to $35 if you have all the parts. But
I've not seen what they do with them. dr
Sprint: haven't see em buy/sell used phones.
Nextel: some offer $35 for your old phone. Unknown what they do with them
Us: we take the trade-ins (thank you), and if excellent; make them available
as loaners; if just used, then we clean off all the phone numbers/details
and give it to the Center for Prevention of Abuse as a 911 only phone.
Note: Phones given to us for the expressed reason of going to the center, go
to the center, even if new.

They will sell you a refurbished phone at half price of new. However, if
you have any credit towards your next phone ($75 for one year, $150 for
two) you will not be able to appy it and the clock will get reset. They
don't have many in stock so it can be hit or miss as they get sold quickly.

Re: Refurbished phones?
Thanks.
I'd assume none of the credits or rebates would apply, as to obtain them I would need to 'renew' my contract for another two years. The issue I have with that is that the lowest per month rate now is more than I'm paying and I have PCS to PCS waived each month also. So, I'm keeping my contract, and thought about 'exchanging' the phone at some point.

Re: Refurbished phones?
Michael, you do not have to change your plan to get a new phone , (although most of the new plans are better). Of course, if you expect to get a discounted price, then you will have to renew your agreement, only fair .

George:
Thanks, I understand, I think.
I can purchase a new phone outright and keep my plan, and I know that.
I was asking about the possibility of buying the refurbished phone.
We really do not need a 'new plan' as I never come close to using the minutes, and don't want to take pictures, and don't send text messages etc. We want to make calls when I want, which is usually not often.

Re: Refurbished phones?
well, if you have had your handset over 2 years, then you can get a free phone, or $150 off a phone of your choice, keep the plan you are happy with, just agree to keep service for 2 more years. And yes, if you can find a refurb, then you can buy without an agreement. However, Sprint stores usually do not have many to sell, better chance is to check with a local Radio Shack.

Re: Refurbished phones?
Oh, one more possibility, ask the Sprint store if they have any "pre-owned" phones (different than refurbs).

Re: Refurbished phones?
Depending on the type of unit and condition, Nextel donated the phones to
the American Red Cross who then sent them to military bases so that
deploying and returning service members could call their families.
They also sell them to their insurance vendor who refurbs them and uses them
as replacements when users file claims.

Re: Refurbished phones?
May I ask what the difference is between 'pre-owned' and refurbished? Haven't heard of that.
The stores tell me that I cannot get the free phone or 150 off as that only applies if my plan was $34.99 per month or more. That's my issue.
I pay less than that right now, and in addition have the PCS - PCS feature included with the fee waived. Therefore, if I agree to a new two year agreement, which I would not object to, my monthly rate would be upped to the minimum.
So, other than a newer phone, I cannot see paying more per month for less minutes and services......
Oh well,

That's actually not true. Minimum plan amount is $35. If his plan is
below that, then yeah, he'd have to change his plan. IF, that is, he
wants to take advantage of phone rebates. And without those rebates,
why renew at all?

Re: Refurbished phones?
Yes, that is exactly my situation: my plan is 29.99 and I've never used all my minutes.
