Phone Activation Time

Why does it take up to four hours for a phone or data card activation on the
Sprint Network? When I was with Verizon, the activation was instantaneous.

Whenever I had to have a phone activated on Sprint is was done right away
(within less than five minutes, less time than it would take to finish
talking to the rep and walk out of the store) except it took up to four
hours for the Vision user information to propogate to the phone. The last
time I had to have this done a few weeks ago it was a little less than four
hours... maybe three to three and a half.

Just how the whole network infrastructure's software was programmed... it's
common for systems using large databases (as Sprint's most certainly would) to
only perform 'bulk' updates at pre-scheduled intervals (e.g., every hour or
so). The idea is that it's a more efficient use of bandwidth which -- at
least at some point in time -- was quite limited. These days bandwidth is
pretty easy to come by, but there's plenty of legacy software out there.

My experience has been that activation is considerably faster and that the
"four hours" number is given just to make sure people wait "long enough"
before calling in a trouble ticket.

The activation of my EVDO data card took 5 hours and 20 minutes.
