I need to replace my old phone with Sprint on Friday. I still have a
year left on my agreement, but the phone I have I HATE (Samsung VGA
1000).
I have this narrowed down the the Samsung A900M or Motorola MOTORAZR
V3m. I have two friends, each has one of them and likes their phone.
I noticed my buddy with the A900M can talk when he wants to send a text
message and it will translate it into text. Not a perfect system, but
alot faster than typing them out.
My friend with the MOTORAZR V3m has no idea if he phone can do that,
but sends very few text messages.
The Sprint site makes no mention of this feature for EITHER phone even
though I know the A900M can do it. I asked a Sprint rep and they
shrugged their shoulders.
Anyone have an opinion on the best phone or know if the Razor has this
feature?
Thanks!

Why haven't you included Sanyo? They have the best build quality and RF
performance of all Sprint phones.

Not so concerned with RF performance. Need slim, light phone, easy to
use and can convert speech to a text message asn the A900M can.

On the A900M, I'm not aware of any voice to text feature, but they do have a
feature called Voice SMS, in which you can record a voice message and send
it to any sprint or SMS enabled phone. It is not converted to text, but
rather is more like a voice mail that you send directly to another phone and
it is stored locally on the phone you send it to. I think it likely that
this is what you are referring to.

"On the A900M, I'm not aware of any voice to text feature, but they do

As I mentioned, I have a friend with a A900 who has shown me this
feature. He can switch his text messaging to "voice" and say "Hi, how
are you?" and the phone converts it to a text message, it translates
his voice to text. I have tried it too.
I have friends who love to text message me, but I HATE typing out the
messages on the phone so this voice to text feature would solve my
problem.
It is true that I can't find any mention of this in the A900
literature, but it sure does do it as I have seen it several times and
LOVE it. I can't tell if the Razor has this function or not.
As far as the VGA1000, I actually have to connect to the web every time
I get a text message in order to read it! A nightmare.

Yes, this is the only shortcoming of the Samsung VGA1000,
it doesn't have true SMS capability.

I think you're talking about VoiceSMS. Both the RAZR and A900m have
this capability, and both also have Voice Dial capability as well.
As for which phone to get, ti really depends on personal preference.
PLenty of people swear by the A900. Others are fanatical about the
RAZR. From a pratical feature standpoint, both are about equal.
There are just a couple of differences. For one, the RAZR lacks a QVGA
screen, though to be honest I didn't even realize this until someone
told me. The screen on the RAZR is plenty clear and bright.
On the other hand the A900 and A900M lack a media card slot, while the
RAZR can take up to 2GB microSD cards. This may or may not be important
to you. But if you don't plan on storing MP3s or tons of video on your
phone, this might not matter to you much.
I've had both, and I prefer the RAZR (and currently use one). To me the
physical quality, voice quality and overall performance of the phone is
far more refined than the A900 was. Though I'm sure there are Samsung
fans who will disagree with me.

Probably because Sanyo's handset quality has taken a nosedive in recent
years, along with their financials. I used to love Sanyo. Now I avoid
their phones at all costs.

That was the case in 2003. Not so now.

the A900 has voice recognition. you say what you want into the phone and it
puts the word on the screen to be sent as a text message

The A900 has better reception than the Sanyo 8200.
