Too many rings before voicemail picks up

I just found out that a caller to my Sprint cell number hears eight
rings before voicemail picks up. I called myself from a land line to
confirm.

Sprint says that's a function of their network, not a feature I can
change on the Samsung a900 phone, and there's nothing I can do about
it.

Is this true? Do I have any options at all? For example, if someone
calls in while I'm on the phone and I hit the 'ignore' key, the caller
at least ought to go right to voicemail.

I just called my cell several times from a landline and it went to voice
mail at 4-5 rings, under three conditions:
1. phone not in the network---it didn't ring
2. phone rang---I didn't answer
3. phone rang--I pushed the 'end' button to silence it(Sanyo MM-7400).

Location: Tampa FL

the fix is to let the phone go online as in turn it on let it sit for 5 mins
once a week and it goes back to normal voice mail operation after that.

Ugh, I have been away from this NG for years and when I come back to see
about Sprint's new Smartphones I still see post about "Call Delivery"
problems.

I hate to tell you this Rick, but I had an old GSM phone and not only could
you kick someone straight to voicemail, but if you held the same button
down, you could send them into never never land and they wouldn't even get
to your voicemail!

I've had CDMA phones on Verizon and Sprint with "Ignore" softkeys that would
send the caller to voicemail as soon as you pressed it. Definitely not a
network or CDMA vs. GSM issue. It's just a feature some phones have, while
others don't.

Yes, I just found out, the new 6800 has that "ignore" softkey that shows up
when it receives a phone call, but holding that button down does not change
the way it works.

I think the deal with sending a caller to never never land, by holding a
button down, was specific to GSM since I've never seen that feature with any
other service provider. And to go one step further, I only saw that on one
phone too.
