Reading several posts in the past few days, I've sort of realized that a
lot of you guys have some very specific needs for your cell phones,
particularly as it applies to business usage (e.g. Windows Mobile,
Office document editing, etc.). So it's only reasonable that you will
not like certain phones that don't do these things, or do them well (and
apparently this is one reason many of you don't like the iPhone).

But if I'm just a casual guy looking to buy a new phone, and I mostly
just use the phone for voice calls and text messaging, and occasionally
other multimedia-type features like playing music, video, etc., checking
email, Google maps, that sort of stuff (basically, not really business
stuff, because it would just be a personal phone) which phone would you
    recommend from Sprint?

I'm considering the Instinct, not simply because it's comparable to the
iPhone and I don't want to switch to AT&T and lose my existing service
plan, but more because it just seems like the latest and best
    multimedia-type phone that Sprint has.

    Thanks.

Oh yeah, and of course, reception clarity! I care most about that.

I too have been looking for a phone....
If you are looking for specific info.. then delete... I am just putting up
    my thoughts.

I would like to stay with a SANYO phone. Why? Past experiences with
EXCELLENT reception and EXCELLENT ability to hold a call in weak signal
    area.

I am considering the INSTINCT too, but I cannot swallow the idea of the
'simply everything plan' or one of the other required plans. Reason: I
current have practically everything (2500 min, UNL N&W(7PM), unlimited data,
unlimited messaging, photos, $5 download credit per phone per month. "Free
and Clear America" (roaming off network up to 50% of min.) and it all runs
    around 135 for 5 PHONES!!

Actually I wish Sprint would off a phone similar to the Verizon Voyager. My
only problem with that phone is that it is made by Samsung. I have a bad
taste in my mouth from the Samsung 3500's A460's and other earlier phones.
Although I am told Samsung has made vast improvements.

I am also looking at some of the phones scheduled to come out later this
year. (See a previous Usenet group posting)

I would like the idea of a 'touch screen' but am leery as to the durability
    of it.

If you want a more current, but not (b)leading-edge phone, you might want to
look at the Sanyo Katana II. 3 of the 5 phones on my account are Katanas
(2-I's and 2-II.s) Great phone, OK pictures,

My past two phones have been Sanyo and you are right, they are
excellent. In fact, I was considering the Katana to be my next phone,
for both form factor and it being Sanyo. But there's something about the
Instinct that just seems more natural for multimedia use, and even for
text messaging, I really like the idea of an actual QWERTY keyboard
instead of using a phone pad.

    > I am considering the INSTINCT too, but I cannot swallow the idea of the

Hmm, I didn't know something was required for it. What would I have to
sign up for if I got it? I guess that means losing my current plan?

    Reason: I
    > current have practically everything (2500 min, UNL N&W(7PM), unlimited

Wow, excellent plan! Right now I just have 1000 Anytime/Unlimited N&W at
8pm for $40, but I consider that to be pretty good for the price. I had
free unlimited texts for two years, but that just ended and now it's
$8/month. My fear is ending up paying more for less minutes, even if I
do get extras like text/data/video, etc., because like I said, actually
making phone calls is still important!

I've heard good things about Samsung phones for a few years now. Like
you, I love Sanyo, but Samsung is actually one that I would feel
    comfortable switching to.

look at the 'gotchas' on the Instinct...
"Requires activation on an Everything plan, or Talk/Messaging/Data Share
plan" - from the 'asterisk' on the promotional brochure.

I did go to the store and they said: "Yup, you have to change plans".....

Ugh, then maybe I won't get one after all. Those plans have a
ridiculously low amount of anytime minutes.

"Unlimited" is "a ridiculously low amount of anytime minutes."? :-)

I'm talking about the data plans that do have a certain amount of
anytime minutes (I think 450 for the cheapest). Yes, the Everything plan
has unlimited minutes, but no way I'm changing from a $40 plan to a $100
plan. That's ridiculous. All I need is a plan for myself, so these $100+
    plans are not for me.

The Samsung M500 has been a good phone for me, but I'm not a heavy user.

I can get email, watch TV, text msg (I don't use this), also has camera.
Had this phone for less than a year.

Dropped it once on hard floor with no damage.

Yeah, I should qualify my comment with the belief that paying $70 or $80
(or more) per month for an individual cell phone plan is ridiculous. I
just can't believe how expensive these plans are, and on top of it all,
they don't offer that many anytime minutes (the ones that don't have
unlimited minutes, of course, which are WAY too expensive anyway).

Yeah, I went for a minimal minutes plan and maximum tethered data option
myself. That fits my current needs the best. I'm not happy that Sprint
is going to a 5GB data cap though. I rarely exceed the cap, but I don't
like having to keep track either.

Does this apply to the Everything plans, or just the other data plans? I
would think the point of the Everything plan is to be unlimited!

I haven't found anything *****ing out a limit on data with the
Everything plans, John. Note that they do not include tethered "Phone As
Modem" use though. The data plan for data cards/USB plug-ins does have
    the 5GB cap listed now.

AT&T seems to do it the same way- the 5GB cp only applies to tethering or
PC cards- "on-phone" data is unlimited, probably under the theory that it'd
be difficult to "abuse" data on such a small-screened, limited-function
device (i.e. most phones aren't equipped to do filesharing or act as a
    server, etc.)
