Best Nationwide High Speed Data Access?

Does Verizon or Sprint provide the best nationwide high speed data access? I
was in Longmont and Boulder this week and the Verizon high speed data access
(Express Network) was not available in most locations. I understand that
Sprint provides high speed data access wherever there is cell phone
coverage. Is this true? Does Sprint really have a better high speed data
network?

Verizon has 1xRTT high speed data access in all of their markets now,
from what I understand. Unlike Sprint, they didn't flip the switch in
all of their markets all at once, so the nationwide rollout took longer.

"Wherever there is cell phone access", however, is incorrect regardless
of carrier. It is only available in digital areas. You can't do Express
Network or PCS Vision in an analog coverage area. Sprint's native areas
are 100% digital, and the same is now also true of Verizon, so with either
carrier you should be set as long as you're not roaming onto another carrier.

HOWEVER, having said "as long as you're not roaming" -- there are other
CDMA carriers doing 1x, and SPrint and Verizon may have roaming agreements
with those other carriers that allow for Vision/EN usage there. But you're
not guaranteed high-speed access unless you're on your carrier's own network.

It is my understanding that some affiliates of Sprint that even market under
the Sprint banner don't have 1xRTT running right now.

That is true. Their coverage maps now use the terminology "enhanced
PCS" or something similar for the digital areas that do have
high-speed data.

Not 100% true. There are little gaps here and there where some
affiliate networks are still 2G. But the maps pretty clearly show where
this takes place. but a god majority (I'd say, 95-97%?) of the network
is Vision data capable.

As always, it depends on where you are. In some places, Sprint's data
network is stellar. In other places, it's overtaxed. I imagine the
same is true of Verizon.

However, If Colorado is where you want to use this stuff, and Verizon
doesn't have it up yet, I'd give Sprint a try. They should have data
service throughout the Denver area. Looking at the map, Boulder and
Denver are covered, as are I-76 south of Denver through Pueblo, and I-70
West of Denver past Vail. There's a tiny patch south of Denver and east
of I-76 that doesn't appear to have Vision data coverage yet, but the
rest is covered.

This is not true. My market does not have 1xRTT with Verizon, and I am
almost certain I am not in an affiliate Verizon market.

According to Verizon Wireless Express Network brochure there are still
large parts of their native digital network that will have future
Express Network coverage. I recall South Dakota and Colorado having
those "future coverage" areas. Pick up an Express Network brochure at
a Verizon Wireless store.

The question for you should be, is there data coverage where I'll want
to use it?

For me, the answer is that Sprint PCS has data coverage in areas that
I've used it (during the last 6 months) that Verizon Wireless has
none. (Central Kansas, Southern Missouri, and Savannah, Georgia)
