The Kyocera 7135 is listed on Verizon site for $500. And SprintPCS will NOT
have it but it will have Samsung i500 instead.

As someone else has already told you, we've chosen not to utilize the
Kyocera 7135.

Given the similarities between it and the samsung I500, I suspect it has
more to do with the two OEM's, than with the phones themselves.

No one previously told me that Sprint has changed their mind and wont be
doing the Kyocera.

The Kyocera also plays MP3's which the Samsung I500 is incapable of.
So don't tell me how identical they are.

Luckily my two years with a Sanyo 4700 are almost over.
The Kyocera 7135 is so superior to the Samsung i500, and the Verizon
network has so much greater coverage.....

I had had (for 10 days) a Treo 300, but it had to be rebooted
to refind a signal if it ever lost it. Made me feel like an Alpha tester.

Maybe in your area. No one's perfect everywhere. In fact, I don't think
*anyone* is perfect anywhere. Overall, though, our network covers more
square miles (as a digital network, anyway).

Maybe you're right. Maybe the I500 is better. Or maybe you just want the
MP3 player. If you sit the two phones side by side, you'll see far more
alike than you will different.

That's not a common complaint with the Treo. In fact, it's got a very loyal
following. Many who've called in with questions about it are telling me the
only device likely to get them to give it up is the 600.

This is a huge matter of personal opinion. Because, for one thing, the
Kyocera 7135 is *huge* compared to the Samsung i500. Sure, the i500
doesn't have an SDIO slot, but it's the size of a normal cell phone.
The Kyo is too bulky for me, not to mention that it looks silly
talking into something that size in this day and age (Treo 300 has the
same problems).

Based on what scientific evidence? This may very well be true, but I
don't know. Historyically, Verizon relied heavily on roaming
agreements and non-digital service. Thus, your data network
availability and features such as message (voice mail) waiting
indicator may not work if you're on analog or a partner network. Data
network is something most people don't think about because the earlier
generations of networks and phones (think Sprint Wireless Web; don't
know what Verizon called theirs) weren't really useful. All this has
changed, and the Kyocera 7135 and Samsung i500 are key parts of that
change. If you buy one of these devices, you may find uses for the
data network you would not have envisioned. It will become a new part
of the way you do things -- just as the "wired" Internet has.

There are a few other factors to consider, though. The MP3 player for
me is inconsequential; I have an iPod, and don't need to bother with
MP3s on my phone. But the Kyocera's expansion slot, speakerphone, and
external caller ID, raise the bar quite a bit - especially considering
the price point of the i500 with the lack of same. Maybe if the i500
weren't both 1) too expensive, and 2) way, way late to the game, by
comparison, there wouldn't be a problem. But because I have a broken
Kyocera 6035 (I have to use a headphone to make outgoing calls), I've
lost a lot of time and patience waiting for a good replacement PDA
phone (that, in addition, is as easily useable on my Mac as the 6035
has been). I'm still not convinced the i500 is it.

I was deeply disappointed when it was announced that the 7135 wouldn't
be available on SprintPCS. I really rely on my 6035, even though it's
huge and grayscale. I had high hopes that the 7135 would be a good
replacement for it, and now I feel stuck. I still have half a year
left on my contract, and am not looking forwarding to changing
providers. But I need a PDA phone replacement, now, that I can depend
on (the Samsung is an unknown quantity that I have no intentions on
experimenting with to the tune of $600. I bought my 6135 for $99 just
after the 7135 was announced in May 2002). I'm not anxious to leave
Sprint, especially since keeping my number is vital; but if the Treo
600 doesn't pan out (I don't really expect it to either), I might have
to do exactly that once my contract runs out and number portability
kicks in. For the feature set, the history, and the money, the 7135
still seems to win out. If the 7135 were available for use on Sprint
(I couldn't care less about the lack of Vision options, either), I'd
go with that one in a heartbeat.
