    Hello,

Like many other people, I've found that my Sanyo 8100 phone connected to a
laptop will -- after dialing, just using Windows, _not_ the Sprint
Connection Manager software, with #777 -- eventually quit responding. That
is, web pages won't open, pinging will no longer work, etc. I'm planning to
use the 'just run ping every 5-10 seconds' solution to this problem, but it
seems like such a bizarre problem in the first place to me that I wanted to
    ask a few questions:

    1) Does anyone know why this happens anyway? I've seen it happen within a
minute of connecting, but other times not for at least an hour (about the
longest I think I've ever been connected). Why the large discrepancy in
    'time until disfunction'?
    2) One message I read claimed that the Sprint Manager software does the
equivalent of a 'ping' every 4-8 seconds to 'mask' the problem. Is this
really true? I didn't particular dislike Sprint Manager, but it caused my
Windows XP laptop to _completely_ lose _all_ LAN connectivity while
installed! Uninstalling it fixed this problem, so I'm just using Sanyo's
    drivers.
    3) Even though sometimes the data connection icons on the phone become
greyed out, this isn't indicative of the connection no longer working --
just that it's in an 'idle' state and that it'll take a little longer to get
going again next time you access the network (which is fine with me). When
it DOES die, often the icons are still solid in color, and sometimes data is
even sent and received! I've observed where I can still receive Yahoo!
instant messages, yet trying to ping www.yahoo.com fails due to a failure to
resolve its IP address. Can anyone explain this? Note that Yahoo!
messenger usage seems to failure within a minute or so after this, however.

    Thanks in advance,
    ---Joel Kolstad

This is just a guess, but I'm thinking Windows' networking functions don't
have the programming to deal with the "partial disconnect" a Vision device
can take part in virtually at will. That kind of standby connection where,
perhaps, the radio circuitry is no longer actually sending to the tower but
the phone acts like it's still online. I don't have the radio signal
knowledge to get any deeper into it. Just a thought.

Isn't it funny how proprietary stuff does that? AOL's just about as bad. I
don't know how Connection Mgr maintains the connection. It's possible it
might have some "give" in it for additional timeout during the situations
that causes Windows to abandon the connection.

Since the official word is still "we don't support it," I don't know what
I'll be able to find, but I'll try to see what I can.

Thanks; much appreciated. I'm happy with the 'ping workaround,' it would
just feel a little 'cleaner' if such things weren't necessary. :-)

On my company Sprint phone when I'm connected to a laptop, I run my
email client in the background and have it check for messages at
one minute intervals. Two minutes is too long. I use the Opera
web browser with built in email client.
