Will a v60 work on sprint

Specefically, do they use the same protocals, and can I buy an
"unlocked" phone off ebay and make it work on Sprint's digital band?
If not, can you recomend other similar phones without feature bloat,
and durable cases that aren't fat.

Sprint will NOT activate a phone that's not a "Sprint phone."

There are several v60 flavors. one for verizon, which would work.
There's one that is from AT&T that would NOT work.Protocol is PCS IS-95
or 1900mhz CDMA. Affiliates are sometimes known to activate, but NOT
corporate. ATT uses TDMA based technologies as their digital interface.

For a compatible phone, there is a lot of stuff that wouldn't work with
the network. You would essentially have a voice ONLY phone.

Did sprint ever sell these phones with the full data capability. If I
get one that was used on Sprint last(they don't say if it was
date+voice or just voice), what are my chances that I will be able to
at least download new ringtones and JAVA games onto it? My family has
the Vision service, but I don't want to get a brand new color lcd
phone because they're not my type, and in my opinion tend to be bulky.

No the v60 will not work on the sprint pcs network. Sprint uses 1900MHz
as their primary network frequency and on the v60, 1900MHz is not the
primary network frequency.

Since the Verizon v60 is designed to roam on 1900 Mhz in theory it could
be configured to be a SprintPCS phone, but Verizon has not designed it
to do so, and Sprint will generally not allow such. So with both Verizon
and Sprint against you you are most likely SOL.

It's not a matter of "... generally not allow such."

Sprint WILL NOT activate someone else's phone!

Not true. Every v60 ever made for the U.S. supports the 1900 MHz
frequency. Frequency has nothing to do with it.

The issue is that the GSM and TDMA versions are not compatible with
Sprint's CDMA network. The CDMA v60 for Verizon would technically work
on Sprint's network, the issue is that Sprint simply won't activate a
non-Sprint phone, and they have the ESN database to easily enforce that
policy.

Doesn't Sprint have a strong preference for CDMA 1X phones, since they
improve the capacity of their network? I believe the v60c is not a 1X.
There is the v60x/p, but then the issue of having a WAP 2.0 browser on
1X data arises.

Nokia sidestepped this by offering a voice-only 1X model. If it was
succesful enough, maybe other vendors will (be able to) do so as well.

But its a liability issue.

Sure it would be nice to be able to take any phone that uses the 1900MHz
CDMA network, BUT...

You're using a phone on a network that the phone has not been tested on.
Yes, they may say 1900MHz CDMA, but what about other functionality?
Voice mail, voice command etc...

I'm sure some people would understand that these features may not work
100% with Sprint PCS's service, but there are many who would expect 100%
compatability with Sprint's network. Thus causing a huge issue.

Second, Sprint PCS would have no way of testing and updating these
phones. Again, some people would understand others would do nothing but
cause a huge stink over this stating "Well, Sprint allowed me to
activate it".

In a nutshell, yes, people would be happy with someone else's phone (an
I700 from Verizon?), and I'm sure if it wasn't the liability issue,
Sprint would love to also (since they didn't have to shell out the money
for the phone), but in the end, the service aspect of it would most
likely eat up the savings.

Rumor has it that Sprint will have Motorola phonas again probably in
the November time frame. They might allow the v60 soon. Maybe Sprint
will some day have an American made phone (built in China) on their
network.

No, that's not going to happen.

The v60 was very close to being a Sprint phone (you could actually see
the v60 product page on SprintPCS.com if you edited the link), but
Sprint pulled out on the deal.

Motorola is no friend of Sprint, they did something major to make
Sprint mad.
