I'm goin' to Jamaica in a couple of weeks.

Does anybody know if a Sprint phone can be used there...interested in
voice only...and what the roaming rate might be.

    I called customer support.

She said, 'No...the phone can't be used there. But if it DOES work,
the rate will be very expensive'. lol

    Go figure!!

Hope ya'll have a nice weekend...

You didn't say which phone you have, and in looking over cdg.org, the only
CDMA frequency offered there is 800MHZ. So, if you can roam on that, or on
800 Analog, it will cost you a bunch in roaming fees.

I've been watching...looks okay so far.

They don't get too many each season. The other islands pretty much
block them. And I'll be on the west coast...Negril.

    Trent,

I just came back from Negril last week, and neither my Verizon phone nor
my Sprint phone would work at the airport or at the resort in Negril.
But do you really want to be talking to anyone when you are out there?
I didn't miss it all that much.

We went to Couples Negril - absolutely beautiful.

    Have fun,
    Brad

Last time I went to Kingston on business, I reserached this a little. Your
best bet was either a TDMA network like Cable and Wirelss or GSM under, I
think they were called Digicell. I took my ATT&T TDMA phone down there and
it worked quite well. I was expecting to be horrified at the bill, but I
think my calls were running about $1 a minute. The sprint phone on CDMA is
    not likely to work

I took my Sprint cell phone on a Caribbean cruise last year, and after
Key West, it didn't work anywhere, not Cozumel, not Caymens, not Aruba.

We're goin' to Beaches Negril, Brad...all inclusive...for a week. How
was the bus trip?...take about an hour?

I only wanted to make 2 calls...

    1. 'Hi...we made it safely.'

    2. 'Hi...we're leaving now.'

Did you happen to see any public computers down there?...to send a
    quick email.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.

Hope ya'll had a nice weekend...

I was charged roughly $2.50 per minute when I called from Bermuda a few
    years ago.

$1.50 for international long distance, and $1.00 for international
roaming. (numbers might be a few cents off).

I didn't get ot test it in Panama, Costa Rica, or Belize earlier this
year (I wish I did, though)...

isn't that a major assumption, that maybe you could roam there/ they
might be GSM only, in which no standard stateside SprintPCS p[hone would
work, which is what I found in Cozumel, Aruba etc..

Where is the assumption? I showed what I got charged while in Bermude,
and also stated I didn't get to test it in 3 other countries, and that I
wish I did get to test it while I was there.

My SPCS phone did work in the Caymans. Strictly analog calling, but it
did work. $1 per min. for local calls.

Sprint employees due a MAJOR disservice if they tell people to try and
use their SprintPCS phone over seas. GSM is the standard in most of the
rest of the world, and SprintPCS phones flat won't work, and in the few
cases they do, its a major roaming charge (multiple dollars per minute).

    Re: Jamaica

    Trent,

Our resort had one public computer with web access. Had to wait 10
minutes or so to get on, but worth it. I'd check with the resort to see
if they have one - it wasn't advertised for Couples but they did have
    one.

The bus ride is more like 90 minutes (Beaches is very close to Couples),
and bring a video camera! I thought they drove crazy in Atlanta!
You'll trip out when driving through the little densely populated towns
and you think you're going to get in a head-on collision every 20
seconds. They pass (bus drivers included) whenever they want to,
regardless of whether they should But at least they are polite about
it (they just wave instead of yelling and road-raging).

Oh yeah, and check your luggage very thoroughly right before you head to
the airport to leave Jamaica. A couple we buddied up with found a small
bag of coke stuffed deep into their luggage. The police said it was
probably someone at the airport who was afraid the cops were on their
trail so they stashed it with the Americans in hopes of retrieving it
later. "No problem mon, happens all de time" is what he was told....

To stay on topic, Sprint never worked for me, but I heard someone
mention that Cingular did. Didn't verify that though.

Have a Red Stripe for me!

Now that I think about it, I did have my Sprint phone locked into
SprintPCS only mode. Never tried analog on the Sprint phone... Just a
    thought.
