Need to buy a Kyocera 6035 phone

I'm looking for a 6035 in good working condition (can call out &
receive calls without having to use an earphone, along with a working
PDA). Short story: if I can get a working replacement for my 6035, I
will stay with Sprint at least until next January, maybe beyond, if
Sprint starts offering decent PDA phones at a reasonable cost again
(or at least, offer current customers some sort of incentive to stay
that doesn't involve more minutes; not everybody needs more minutes).

Long story (and note that I'm not blaming any specific company for the
following, so Justin, Phillipe, Rob, et al, keep your pissing contest
to yourselves):

In May 2002, I bought a 6035 phone/PDA combo for $99 through Best Buy;
the cost was cut considerably because the 7135 had recently been
announced. In anticipation of the 7135, I also paid $80 for their
3-year product replacement plan (not extended warranty). Sure, if I
had to do it all over again, I wouldn't have; but considering the
outrageous prices of cell phones, it seemed like a good thing at the
time. Unfortunately, as many of you know, the 7135 is now
Verizon-only; but at the time my phone started going bad, that was not
known.

As soon as my 6035 starting showing signs of trouble, I probably
should've tried to get it fixed under warranty. But since I depended
on the PDA side of the unit as much if not more than the phone side,
and since at the time, I thought I would be able to trade it for a
7135 as soon as it was released, I did what the Best Buy rep suggested
when I told him that I could hear callers, but they couldn't hear me:
I bought a headset for it. This worked, for awhile; and after the
manufacturer's warranty expired this May (and, of course, the 7135
went to Verizon), I started looking for the Samsung i500 (which Best
Buy kept saying was coming "any week now"; recently, it became "it's
in our warehouse". Of course, both were wild stretches of the truth).

I would've much rather had the 7135, but it wasn't an option under
Sprint, so I waited...and waited...and waited. Then the Samsung i500
was finally fully announced - and I found myself completely
underwhelmed by its featurerice ratio. Still, when my 6035 finally
stopped working for all intents and purposes as a phone (now callers
can't hear me at all, even with a headset), I even considered using
the $99 available through the replacement plan as a consolation
"discount" off the ridiculous $600 for the i500. But alas, I can't
even do that, since neither of the local Best Buy stores have them in
stock. And replacing the combo 6035 with a standard phone isn't an
option, since again, I depend on its PDA.

To their credit, the folks at Best Buy's national support line did say
that if I can find a replacement 6035 in a store, they'll reimburse
me; but so far, I'm coming up with nothing. I've been on google.com
most of the day (in between calling Sprint stores and eventually
Kyocera itself); still, nothing. eBay isn't an option in this case.

So now I have a few choices ahead of me, none of which I like:
-Be without a usable phone for the duration, waiting untold weeks to
buy the grossly overpriced i500 (if at all; no guarantee it won't go
the way of the Sanyo 4900)
-Pay $150 to get out of my Sprint contract (or use the bad contract
language to get out "free"), but lose my phone number for leaving
before portability takes place, then still spend an additional ~$500
for the more reasonably priced-per-feature (but still expensive) 7135
-Forfeit the $80 that I spent last year to prep for a replacement
phone, buy the cheapest Sprint phone I can find, be stuck using both
that phone and the 6035 as a PDA only, and wait until my contract
expires & LNP starts up, to switch to Verizon's all-in-one 7135

This really sucks, either way you look at it; it's nobody's fault but
my own for expecting a decent phone at a decent price, but there it
is. Unless anyone here knows where I can get a replacement 6035 from
a store (which is the only way I can get reimbursed by Best Buy), I'm
stuck between a rock and a hard place. Either way, though, come
January (after my contract expires and LNP kicks in), I'm switching to
Verizon. As I've said here before, I really don't want to; I happen
to like my Sprint plan, and except for the occasional airhead, I've
been satisfied with its CS. But given the choice of phones at Sprint
versus Verizon, it's my best choice. I just hope the 7135 doesn't
disappear in the meantime.

I500s are starting to slowly come into stock at the Sprint PCS retail
stores, maybe Best Buy might get a few in?

I checked the inventory today, less than 20 6035s are in inventory
across the country, and that includes demo units, returns etc.. (I
didn't check reconditioned phones).

Will best buy give you a refund if you get it though Radio Shack? Maybe
some of them will have one? ( I know, its a long shot)

My 2 yr old 6035 died while waiting for i500. I bought brand new 6035
on ebay from "jack483" for $72. He has 3 more at this "buy it now" price as
of this minute.
Two-day delivery, exactly as promised.
Has latest phone-side software (KT 1.1.23) but older Palm SW (1.0.05)

Thanks for the pointer. I was told "eBay isn't an option", but I'll

Maybe one of these years; but I can't wait for that any longer. I

Amazing. If you do come across one (even reconditioned), I'd be glad
to hear about it.

They said if I can purchase it "from a store" (any store, but not, for
instance, eBay), they'll reimburse me. So I'm hopeful. Thanks for

Sprint is closing out the Treo 300, and through the web and 3rd party stores,
it can be had for $99.99 after rebates.

Personaly, I wouldn't trust EBay with buying wireless phones.

It does help when the seller gives you an ESN of the phone they you're
buying, so you can check it and make sure its not in fraud and/or stolen
status.

Also, 99.9% of the time phones purchased though EBay are used and have
no warranty, but some people have purchased phones from there and will
swear on the bible by it.

I guess its just preference.

Whats your general location? I'll see if a store has any near you.

Now, don't get upset if you call a store that I say might have it, my
system gives me ALL the 6035s, demo units, defective returns, ones that
are incomplete (no charger, no battery etc..), and can't be sold for
other reasons (crushed box etc..).

If its the only available source, or if one needs to save the money they
can save by buying eBay, then its going to happen.

This is true for new subscribers. If you're a current Sprint customer,
you probably can't get the $99.99 deal, unless it's changed in the
last couple of weeks.

I bought mine used on ebay (I've been a Sprint customer for a long
time) for $185 and have been very pleased with it.

On the otherhand between discounts and credits from Sprint for renewing
my contract I effectively got a Samsung I330 for free.

Not on my own. Kyocera pretty much shocked me when they quoted ~$225

Definitely; I'm not one to attempt such things, but I have a few
industrious friends who wouldn't hesistate. Thanks to you and others
for all advice and pointers so far.

I replied privately to the OP, but wanted to mention here as well.
I have a 6035 in like new condition, always in a case.
It is back in it's box andthe software/manuals etc. are stilll shrink
wrapped. Also have the MSL for the phone, so switch it to VZ if you
want.

Loved the phone and used it a lot. In great shape, but switched to a
vision family share plan and had to go back to multiple devices.
