excuse me if i'm a little late with this, but please bare with me. i've
been off line for a while and am still trying to catch up. i just
noticed the 3588i on the sprint website and was wondering, (#1) how long
has it been there, and (#2) does it have the phone based SMS or is it
web based? the features list nothing about vision, but it says it is
messaging capable. how will/is sprint billing for this kind of data
usage?
thanks
ryan

It just came out.
The phone can do SMS.
SprrintPCS' network doesnt do SMS yet. Is planned to
at some indeterminate date in the future.
Vision is $15 a month for the web data you can shoehorn onto that ittle
screen.

Re: nokia 3588i
That Nokia phone does not have a web browser so hence no Vision. I've
already played around with it at a sprint Kiosk.

There are package options setup for it, but I don't know if we mean them=20
for public release yet. Let me look into that at work tonight, and I'll=20
get back to you.
The messaging on the 3588i will be phone-based once we get the service=20
up and running in full production.

The SprintPCS Network can not handle SMS now. You CAN NOT do SMS on
SprintPCS regardless of what phone you might have.

Maybe check into things before you post... All Sprint phones will be
including REAL SMS, starting with the Nokia 3588i.
SMS is able now, but will not be turned on and officaly launched till
Nov.

Obviously the *network* can handle SMS, because Virgin Mobile runs on
the SPCS network and includes SMS.

Includes phones capable of SMS, or has phones that currently do SMS???

Virgin Mobile phones currently *do* SMS. And all indications point to
Sprint offering the service in the future as well... especially since
phones coming out now have the feature built in and Sprint didn't make
them take it out.
It's just a waiting game as to when.

The way I understand it (and I'm not a specialist in this field so take this
with a grain of salt) the ability to do SMS depends on a combination of
network switches/servers and phone hardware/software. Even though Virgin
Mobile uses the Sprint network, they put in their own system that included
SMS, and their phones all implement SMS. In other words Sprint has to make
changes to some of their network hardware/software (and I'll bet there's a
whole bunch of stuff they'll have to upgrade) and they have to sell phones
that implement SMS.
I'm also guessing that as they're doing these upgrades for SMS they're also
working on upgrading their network components for Push-to-Talk. In fact,
many of the network challenges SprintPCS has to overcome for a
well-performing SMS are the same ones they have to overcome for PTT. Also,
it'll be interesting to see whether SMS and PTT sell well enough that it
turns out to be a good business decision for Sprint to have poured lots of
money into upgrading their network.
