The Sprint employees and apologists always blame the firmware or the user. More
likely SprintPCS has oversold its network in your area, so your signal is weak,
regardless of what meter on phone may show.
Play their game, get all the updates, but ==> if <== the problem continues
(and this seems to be an ongoing issue posted here regularly), you end up with
three choices.
1. Live with it.
2. Go to SprintPCS store and insist they swap
you for a working phone, with no activation fee.
3. Leave Sprint, but write to your State Attorney General complaining that you
should not have to pay an Early Temrination Fee if your cell phone is not "Fit
for Purpose". That over rides any wishlist they stuck in your contract. Send a
certified copy to Sprint HQ. That always works.

Bullwhacky. I never blamed his signal problems on the firmware or PRL
versions loaded up on the phone. I just recommended that he get his phone
updated.
Neither Joe or Matt mentioned where they are experiencing the digital
roaming (City, St), whether it's where they live, work, or just travel
through. As to digital roaming, when the phone is set on SPCS only, I've
seen that myself, many moons ago (maybe 4 yrs ago or so), when traveling
through VA and before Horizon became an affiliate.

It's not a game, and you know it's not a game. It could very well help to
upgrade both the firmware & PRL. As you know, the PRL not only recognizes
roaming partners, but also new freqs that SPCS might add in areas where
capacity has been maxed out and they need to increase capacity.

Nah, the signal is strong here (Cambridge, MA - Central Sq) just not in
the dead center of my building.

Have been with no problem, just gotta keep the antenna extended.

Having been a satisfied customer for over 5 years, I think this seems like
an overreaction to an almost non-existent problem. I'm not under contract
and am not subject to any termination fee. My feeling is the
purpose of the OP's query was to confirm that other users have experienced
a very peculiar problem that may be related to a bug in the 5300 or a
weird hiccup with the Sprint PCS system.
Bob Smith's advice to upgrade both the Firmware and PRL seems
reasonable and well advised. Thanks!
Matt

Show me sompleace where I've blamed an issue on the user or the
firmware / PRL that wasn't relevant (and I don't want to see a place
where an update DID resolve the issue).
Show me one place where I blamed coverage on PRL (with the exception of
having a bad or no PRL (bad meaning a version that doesn't exist, such
as 00999 etc..)).
If you're going to make a generalized statement like that, then be
ready to back it up.

I completely agree with DSL GURU. I also agree with Phillipe,
PHil_Real, Loving Moonlight, and P_Reality and anything that they have
to say from now on.
You guys rock!

Which a software update just MIGHT fix, don't you think? That is hardly an
apologist suggestion, just a practical one.

Possibily it was worth a shot, but we have now heard back that it didnt solve
or change a thing.

This problem seems to plague Ubiquitel's affilliates in California as well.
I had this happen with my 4900, and a trip to the SPCS store to get it
upgraded firmware wise has seemingly fixed it
The affiliate in question here is VIA wireless (owned by Ubiquitel), and I
can almost imagine what happens when Qwest wireless comes online with
Sprint. I think we're going to see a LOT more firmware fixes because I do
not think the core equipment of VIA and Horizon in particular is fully up to
Sprint standards, and that's just a guess on my part (My phones *do* work
like they're supposed to, but I do get the same errors posted here)

Where have we heard back that he updated software? I am only aware of an
updated PRL. Reading comprehension 101.
