How to activate my used phone

Hi,

I have an used Nokia 5190 phone. I discontinued the service with
Voicestream 3 years ago. I'd like to activate it with T-Mobile for a new
plan. But, the phone doesn't power on after charging it for 2 hours. Is
this normal? Should I replace the battery? How do I know if this phone is
locked?

1) The battery's probably dead.

2) You won't know if the phone's locked until you can power it up!

If the phone was locked to VoiceStream it will still fire right up with
TMOBILE, not a problem As to the battery, unfortunately if you let them get
to a point of flat, it is sometimes hard, if not impossible to get them to
take a charge. A charging conditioner can usally take bring them back, as
opposed to a standard AC Wall Trickle Charger, as that is what u probably
have. A good reputable shop probably has a BAttery Conditioner, BUT, there
is so many 5100 series and 6100 series batteries for next to nothing on
ebay, it isnt worth it. And even if you bring it back, it is still a 2 yr
old(if not older) battery
Also, if you are going to activate a new plan, they will give you their loss
leader phone. And even at FREE, it ihas to be a bit nicer then the 5190
(agreed great phone but even the greats have to go the wayseide some day)
and if you just have to use that phone, still take the FREEBIE, sell it on
EBAY to pay for your battery and make a few bucks (BTW, I am sure I have a
5190 battery new here if u cant find one)
