I have a Telus pay-as-you-go cellphone, used here in the Toronto area.
I'll be visiting the US in a few months, and would like to use the
    cellphone there.

Telus doesn't support it, but the salesman said there is some way of using
it; the catch is that they (whoever they are) charge outrageous amounts
per minute - he said $15 / minute wasn't out of the question.

Is there some way of using it in the US that won't bankrupt me?

I'am guessing your phone is a tri-mode cdma/amps phone, please post your
model number. The high rate is for roamers with unactivated phones calling
collect or using a credit card. The rate is about $2 per minute with a $2-$3
setup fee per call, USD. No incomming calls with this setup. Will you be
visiting all of the US or just one region ? Your best bet would be to pickup
a prepaid phone for use here. Which phone would depend on where and how much
you will use the phone. Check out this site we have had a lot of changes to
    prepaid plans here:

I doubt it's $15/minute, unles Telus really, really screws over their prepaid
customers. Might be between 50 cents and a buck a minute.

Your best bet might just be to get a US prepay here...

I guess "they" would be Nextel. Customers of Nextel's prepaid service,
Boost Mobile, can roam onto Telus for a 20 cents per minute surcharge
    according to this chart:

    http://www.cellguru.net/prepaid_compare.htm#Boost

But you have the opposite situation, and
I have no idea what the charge would be. Have you checked Steve
    Punter's page?
