A few questions...
Is GSM gaining market in the midwest? I currently have CDMA available
and it appears that almost all phones around here are CDMA. If other,
are they are workable only in the larger metro areas and not once you
get away from town?
My contract is up soon. If GSM is going to be available to rural areas
it might be worth waiting for. Otherwise, I'll shop CDMA plans and port
the number to the best one.
When I go to Europe next fall, I plan on buying a payg there. Unless
they are pretty expensive. The stay will be about 2 wks, but that would
be cheaper than taking a chance on something from e-bay.
Also saw quad band on net, do I assume that it works 2 bands here and 2
bands in Europe?

Sprint and Verizon sell the Samsung 790, which is 1900/800 CDMA for use in
the US and also runs on the 900/1800 European GSM bands (yes, it's a hybrid
GSM/CDMA phone). There are quad-band "world phones" that run on GSM
frequencies here (1900/800) and in Europe... they're GSM only.

Yes, with Cingular migrating to GSM and incorporating the AT&T Wireless GSM
network, and with T-Mobile now in some markets where it wasn't five years
ago, I'd have to say it is. Whether or not GSM has coverage as extensive as
CDMA in the Midwest, I don't know.

Re: Best combo
I have GSM service in Chicago northwest suburbs and it's been good so far.
It's not all CDMA here in the Midwest. I don't know how you came to that
conclusion. There are plenty of GSM phones and service in midwest. I take my
phone often to Milwaukee area. I haven't had any problem so far with GSM
service in the midwest. I haven't been to too many rural areas in midwest.
So, I can't comment on the GSM service in rural areas. I would think, it
will work fine. Quadband means, it will work anywhere GSM service is
available. As for the service, I think you could probably by cheap
pay-as-you-go sim in Europe and put that in your phone and off you go.
Have a safe trip
