What company by phone number

can you use the first three numbers (after area code) to determine what
cellular company the number is on? I want to find out what companies people
are using just by having their cellular number.

Yes and no. In the US we have "local number portability" that allows
customers to bring their number with them when they change services. You
can find out what carrier originally issued a number by the prefix, but
not necessarily who has it now. My T-Mobile number, for example, was
originally a Southwestern Bell (now AT&T) landline.

My T-Mo number is in a block allocated to Verizon Wireless and I moved it
to Sprint before moving it to T-Mo.

No, because of number portability. I have the same number I had when I
bought the 3rd cellular phone account ever sold in Charleston, SC. I
took the number with me when I finally got fed up with first GTE Useless
then Verizon. My Cellular One of Charleston number is on Alltel, now, so
its block is split and useless for your purposes.

I'm glad it's that way....so I don't become a target for the spammers
trying to get to the Verizon customers....as I suspect SBC Global wants,
right?...(c;

In some countries you can, but since many European countries have
introduced number porting, it's getting more and more complicated.
