Hi, all.
Is there an easy way to tell which carrier a cell phone is from, based
on the phone number?
For example, my number starts with area code 780 number 905-xxxx and
that means I'm with Rogers.
Is there a downloadable cross reference or a web site that will
translate area code and prefix into carrier?

Maybe once upon a time, but now that people can keep their numbers
when they change carriers, no.

I like this site
http://www.telcodata.us/telcodata/telco
though there are lots of others.
Note that this only tells you the carrier which originally assigned
the number, however. Individual numbers which have been ported to a
different carrier reside in another database which I've not seen
publically available anywhere.

Thanks Dennis, that'll do the trick.

OOPS, hadn't thought of that.

It's still an interesting question.
So long as it's been brought up, does anybody know if any carriers
tried to get their prefixes to ***** anything cute?
The number on my oldest account starts out 612-AIR-Txxx, which was
assigned to me by Air Touch, which was fronted by US West New Vector
around here.
Air Touch has morphed into Verizon Wireless, and US West is now Qwest.

http://fonefinder.net will show you who the number was originally allocated
to.

I use this one: http://www.localcallingguide.com/lca_prefix.php
Note that in California, blocks of numbers are assigned to carriers per
every 1,000, not every 10,000, - per the state's Public Utilities Commission
order to try to reduce the number of area codes needed.
California: 27 area codes, shooting for 30 soon!

Not any more. I have a Cellular One number that was on Verizon. I'm now
an Alltel customer who took my number with me when I dumpe Verizon for
Alltel years ago. So, with number portability allowing users to take their
numbers to new carriers, you can't tell any more....
