Just rescued a 3589i from the dumpster.
All I really need to do is:
-----------------------------------------------------------
- Purge the existing in-phone contact list
- Set the phone to use the SIM card for it's contact list.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Anything more would be gravy.
Looks like prior user dutifully changed the security code from
"12345" to something else.
End of story?
Or is there a way to totally reset the phone - back to empty
everything and SecurityCode="12345"

Most likely yes. Anything else would defy the purpose of a security code.

Per Andreas Wenzel:

My hope was that the purpose of the security code was to prevent
unauthorized access to data on the phone.
If that were the case, being able to do a deep reset (i.e. clear
everything) wouldn't defeat the purpose.
But the more I Google, the more it looks like you've nailed it.
I'm seeing something about programs that run under windows and go
at the phone through a data cable... but am not sure which phones
they service. They're talking about "DCT3" and "DCT4" phones -
which I guess is some sort of software/firmware rev level that
applies to various models.

Boy Do I feel dumb...
When I put my SIM card in there and tested it, I called the time
service (TIM-1212) and hung up before it answered - assuming that
I had service.
Of course, when I just did that again, but waited for an answer,
I got "Welcome to Verizon....".
Oh well... back to the dumpster for this one.
Seems like a nice phone though....
