Hi,
I have a Sprint cellular modem. Is there a way to determine its
current
IP address given the phone number? The device is in a remote location
so I don't have an computer wired into its local network from which I
could check the IP address.
Sprint csr claims it can't be done; I'm just looking for a 2nd
opinion.
All the best, & thanks for your help.

Sprint csr would be right. EVERY time the phone connects it is given a
different IP address, even if it has been offline for 5 seconds. I've
never seen any sellphone data link that works differently. They do this
just to make sure you have no way of running any kind of data server on it,
calling it from a remote location like you're dreaming of.
It has no IP address UNTIL someone uses the modem to access the net from
the computer calling the modem.....or tethered phone.....or any other way
to get online through the sellphone service data. It acts just like a PPP
link, reconnecting after very short periods of inactivity and being
assigned a new IP each time. As soon as it sets in DORMANT mode for X
seconds, it's dumped off until you click something and it reconnects
already logged on, again. The Rolling IPs prevent actual calling it as
it's not just sitting connected all the time.
IP roulette drives my bank's online accounting system crazy.....

FWIW the IP address was (over a period of months) stable for days
at a time, and we were connecting into the device at will.
I'm just trying to restore it to that previous, happy state.
Incidentally, we initially tried Cingular, which doesn't allow
incoming
connections, and so we had to switch to Sprint, which does.

Could a dynamic DNS service like dyndns.org be a workaround for you?

Actually, we have a computer on the local network of the router
(TopGlobal) to which the Sprint cellular modem is attached,
which was issuing requests via inadyn to change the ip address
associated with a symbolic name. But that computer is down,
so the symbolic address resolves to an old ip address, not the
current one.

What TopGlobal model are you using? Some of them (e.g. the MB6800) have
built in dyndns functionality, so you do not necessarily need a PC to do
the updating.

Yes, I think it is MB6800 and it does have the built-in dyndns
function.
There was some reason that we aren't using it; I think there is a
statement on the dyndns.com website to the effect that it's preferable
to have a separate host do it --- I forget the reasoning. But given
the
difficulties we are having, maybe we should go ahead and have the
router do the dns update. I'll look into it again.
