I was just wondering what mobile data speeds people are getting? I am averaging 100Kbps for EDGE and 800Kbps for 3G on my Samsung Eternity. Are these speeds normal for these 2 networks? The speed differences are most noticeable when trying to view CV clips; where EDGE looks horrible and 3G looks much, much clearer.

You are averaging about the right amount of data.

AT&T has a notably better network for data than most carriers (Sprint, etc.). They are similar to Verizon's network as far as speeds go. Overall coverage does suffer with AT&T.

On my Verizon Wireless phone I get 255kbps on their 1X data (comparable to EDGE) and for the 3G I get an average of 925kbps in EV-DO rev. O areas while I get 1mbps (at fastest) in areas with EV-DO rev. A. Rev. a and o are both 3G...rev. A is just the newer, updated version.

    AT&T only has one form of 3G...Verizon has two...Rev. A and O.

Yeah, AT&T does have a limited amount of 3G but hopefully they improve on it. The thing I wonder about this type of data is that both AT&T and Verizon are planning on upgrading to LTE for their 4G networks. But while AT&T should be able to make a more simple upgrade, Verizon will have to make a more vast upgrade. So I wonder if that alone will cause AT&T to have less of a problem expanding 3G now; seeing as when it comes time to upgrade to LTE; their network will already be ready for it. Both Verizon and Sprint didn't have too many problems upgrading from CDMA to EV-DO, because they are part of the same family of products. That is why EV-DO is so vast and WCDMA (HSDPA) is so limited. AT&T on the other hand has had to invest more money, but LTE, at least from what I understand, is just an update to what AT&T has already been building out. So maybe 3G will be where EV-DO is within a year. Hopefully there will be more 3G soon.

And your speeds are faster then I was able to get with Verizon, but they are not too far off. It's just crazy when I think about the data speeds of just a few years ago, compared to now. I just want to see how fast people have gotten their data speeds up to on any networks.

Re: What Data Speeds Are You Getting On Your AT&T Phone?

Verizon has already worked out the kinks they were expecting to have with LTE.

LTE coverage will begin popping up as soon as May, 2009 for Verizon's network. The reason Verizon choose to go with LTE is because it will allow Verizon customers to use their phones virtually in almost any country and be on a same platform without being limited. LTE will actually be much easier for Verizon than AT&T. This is because Vodafone is funding about 80% of the LTE project. AT&T will be forced to fund it themselves. AT&T has only just started their 3G expansion. Verizon Wireless was among one of the first to begin the 3G rampage. Verizon has 3G in nearly EVERY market where their wireless on network coverage exists.

Also, LTE will not only run data but voice services. This means Verizon phones will work internationally as reliably as AT&T's international spectrum. This will also, if allowed by the FCC, allow Verizon to use AT&T's LTE services, when they're set up. Verizon made a smart choice. Rather than the need to convert their CDMA network to GSM, they decided to covert LTE to a CDMA form to make their spectrum larger. If their plan works successfully, Verizon Wireless will hold the largest amount of wireless spectrum and off network coverage compared to almost EVERY wireless carrier, except the world's largest carrier...China Mobile.
