My 2280 seems to be somewhat lacking on endurance when it comes to its
battery standby time. The blurb when I got the phone said over 200 hours
SB time. Yet, increasingly, the battery's near flat after 2, maybe 3
days of sitting there, doing nothing.
In the past I've enquired here about its battery life, with responses
ranging from "depends" to "yeah, sounds dodgy". But even when it was
new, the battery's never lasted longer than 2 to 3 days before it's
needed to be charged. And when I go away where the reception is dodgy,
the battery life may often last no more than 24hrs, maybe 48hrs at a
pinch.
I'm told that the battery load is greater when the unit's trying to
latch onto week or non-existant signals.
While in the local Telstra mobile shop the other day, the sales
assistant suggested that when I charge the phone with it switched off.
Supposedly it charges "better".
What I might do is to remove it and cycle it a few times and put it on
this smart charger that we have at work for reconditioning rechargables.
See if that does any good. Otherwise, I can get an aftermarket battery
for around $40 delivered.

I'd be happy with 2-3 days regardless of the blurb. However if you purchased
the unit specifically because of it's quoted battery life then it's only
reasonable that you push the matter further.

That's very true. How many "bars" do you get when it's on standby at home
(or wherever you use it)?

I don't think that's true. A bit quicker, perhaps.

Assuming it's a lithium-ion battery that will probably kill it. They are
actually more happy being "topped up" rather than being fully cycled.
.....And they take a few charges to reach full capacity, but you imply that
you've had it for a while so it's probably not that.
And you can probably get an aftermarket battery for ~$15 at Strathfield etc.

yours behaves exactly like our 2280. I like it though because it gets
coverage where most can't. Sounds like a spare battery is the answer.

Yep, mine's about the same.

Being a Lithium Ion battery, I doubt that'll do much at all, other than
possibly shag the battery even more.

Yeah, my 2280 gets fantastic reception. Ugly phone, chews batteries, but
lets you put a phone-call through in the most out-of-the-way places!

they do that when you move around quoted life is when it doesnt move and is
near a strong station

Yeah, I forgot that it was a L-ion battery when someone else mentioned
this. Thing is, the battery, since new, has never really had a long
standby time. At home where it sits most of its time, the signal bars
are usually half to three quarters on the scale.

That sounds like telstra! ;-)
It won't charge "better", but it will charge faster.

Not with respects to what the original poster calls "better": larger
capacity/longer life between charges for his phone.

Not necessarily.
Don't forget Li-ion phones have intelligent chargers, they don't just dump
current to the battery. The operation of the handset may or may not "steal"
power that the charger would have otherwise used.

Actually, it's quite easy. However, often when I go away, I don't have
access to a charger, so I'm relying on the phone's battery to stay
charged. This is particularly so when on bike trips.
Someone suggested turning it off when riding, as I can't hear it to
answer it anyway. Which is what I do.
Having said that, when the blurb says "200 hrs standby time", I'd expect
something that approaches that claim. Not 24 hrs or even 48 hrs...

The obvious approach is a spare battery, but its too stupid to work that out for
itself.
No surprise that it needs a union.

Pathetic, really.

Me too - too easy to fall off when answering anyway. Still, buy a spare
battery - you will forget to turn it off one day and it will be flat when
you want it. (A Telstra tech working on a remote CDMA tower charged mine
once - but I don't count on that happening again).
