Strange - I received an email from Dell Australia tonight offering the Mini
    9 for $549 (delivered).
It's also listed on their website at the same price
    (http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/prod...hs1&l=en&s=dhs

Interesting. I wouldn't mind one of these. Chuck it in the work bag.

I read the reviews. Noone seemed to comment on their performance. ie. how does
an Intel Atom based computer go running Win XP SP3?

And can you run Office 2003 on it? ie. space on HDD, performance, etc.?

The ones 'sold' by Vodafone are slightly different; they have an inbuilt
3G modem (the standard Mini 9 does not).

    Hope that helps AND informs.

This Dell one has an inbuilt 16GB SSID/flash drive rather than a "hard
drive" as such. I'm not sure how well SSID drives perform in comparison
    to standard notebook HDDs.

The Acer Aspire One Netbook comes in different models: one with SSID, one
    with standard HDD.

IIRC, Hewlett-Packard's offering comes with a standard HDD.

This three-month-old article may be of interest:

(Some of the article's conjecture regarding models/specs seems to have
    been incorrect.)

It informs, but doesn't really help. Thanks anyway.

    True.
If you work out the cost of $69.95 a month over 24 months ($30.00 for the
netbook repayment and $39.95 for the 5GB plan) they are charging $720 for
the netbook with in-built 3G modem card.

And they save by not having to give you the USB modem/'Internet key' that
otherwise comes free with with $39/5GB plan on 24-month contracts.
