old at&t plan, Cingular terms and conditions to switch

Ok, after searching several threads I read most people here get the same BS with cingular from at&t.

Current plan on At&t 1050 anytime minutes, unlimited nights/weekends starting a 7pm for 39.99 a month. Got the plan from at&t's TDMA to GSM conversion department still under contact for another 1.5 years

Called Cingular to inquire about getting a family plan. They gave me the same **** as everyone. "If you want a new phone, add features to plan or \change plan details, you need to pay $18 charge, get a new plan and get a new cell phone."

QUESTIONS
Is this a violation of your contact, that they make you get a new plan for getting a new phone if you buy one off of ebay for example?

If my phone dies and I need a new one, I would be willing to pay a full price, but not willing to pay the fee and change my .

Can I buy a unlocked phone on ebay and pop your sim card in without getting a new plan? Does the phone have to be an at&t or cingular unlocked phone?

At&t had a customer relations dept to get customers to renew their contact, does cingular have a similar dept?


Thoughts on dealing with Cingular as a company and their customer service

Usually when two companies merge, the parent company does a little more and goes beyond to switch you over to their system. By charging customers $18 and making them get new plans and new phones is going to lose more customers and give them a bad reputation. It just goes to show, what cingular's bottom line is $$$$$$.

When cingular makes their final attempt (somewhere down the road) to convert former at&t customers to cingular’s billing system, they will make every effort with promotions and prices to get you to switch over.
