I would think that it would be the age of financial responsibility in your state, which is most states is 18, which pretty much means... being able to sign a contract as an adult without a parent.

Then there would be the ability to pay, which is why many underage teens that have accounts that they alone pay for, tend to have prepaid accounts, so you don't need a "contract". Unless of course they have jobs and have been emancipated from their parents.

But I'm going assume you mean how old you need to be to sign a contract and pay for it on your own, without having a parent "co-sign" for you, rather than actually being an emancipated minor.

Otherwise the link below will give you the gist of what being emancipated actually means.

http://chhd.csun.edu/shelia/436/lecture0405.html this of course will vary from state to state.

To add to bear's reply, adding to the abiltity to pay your own account, even if you have the means, your credit rating also comes into play.

To add to Tony & Bear's statement.......

I used to work for Cingular so I can provide some background to it. If you want to have a phone with a monthly bill (not prepaid) then they will have to run a credit check on you. If you've recently just turned 18, then most likely you will not have any credit & you will have to pay a $750 deposit which you will get back in 1 year with good payment history. So, as long as you're 18 & have $$$ to drop on a deposit, then go right ahead.

Go with Sprint, as they have the lowest credit requirement with a spending limit which should keep you in check. The average deposit is $150.00.

I agree with Echo.... if you don't have credit that is the best way to go. Get a credit card with Capitol One..... pay it on time..... get a job..... & then after a few months..... get an American Express card...... (the charge card, not the credit card)...... about 5 months later get an American Express credit card. I guarantee you that by then you'll be approved with a $10,000 limit. If you're worried about having that many cards. Use each of them once or twice a month to buy gas or whatever..... they will simply look at the fact that you've been paying it on time.
